Headache outfinishes Where’s Sterling and Cease to win the Grade 2 Hawthorne Gold Cup.

STICKNEY, Ill. – Mike Maker still was a trainer on the rise when he won the 2004 Hawthorne Gold Cup with Freefourinternet, a 27-1 shot. These days, Maker-trained horses pop up in major stakes races all over the country, and Headache’s win Saturday in the 2011 Gold Cup came as much less of a surprise. Wearing down Where’s Sterling and Cease in a slogging war of attrition, Headache won the Grade 2, $500,000 Gold Cup by a half-length, paying $12.60 as the fourth choice in a field of 10.

Corey Nakatani celebrates his sixth win on Saturday's Belmont card aboard My Miss Aurelia following the Grade 1 Frizette Stakes.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Corey Nakatani became just the third jockey to win six races on one card at Belmont Park as he went 6 for 7 on Saturday’s 10-race program, including two Grade 1 stakes wins.

Nakatani missed becoming the first jockey to win seven races at a NYRA track when his mount in the last, Rubber Duck, finished third after a troubled start.

Nakatani joined Jorge Velasquez, who went 6 for 6 on July 9, 1981, and Ramon Dominguez, who went 6 for 8 on June 8, 2011.
