Aqueduct: Spa City Fever gives Kelly rare win in Alex Robb

OZONE PARK, N.Y. -  A disappointing year came to surprisingly successful conclusion Saturday for trainer Pat Kelly at Aqueduct when Spa City Fever upset the $75,000 Alex M. Robb Stakes by a head over Icabad Crane. Sent off the second-longest shot in the seven-horse field at 34-1, Spa City Fever returned $71.

Taking advantage of a stumbling start by the expected front-runner Stormy’s Majesty, Spa City Fever got away with soft fractions on the lead under Alan Garcia and then held off a late charge from a bottled up Icabad Crane to get his first victory in nine starts this year.

Aqueduct: Swag Daddy comes through as favorite in Restrainor

OZONE PARK, N.Y. -  In the $75,000 Restrainor Stakes for New York-bred 2-year-olds, the supporting feature on Saturday, Swag Daddy repelled a pace challenge from Disco On and drew off to a 4 1/2-length victory over Coalition. It was three-quarters of a length back to Disco On.

The win was the second straight and third from four starts for Swag Daddy since Eric Fein transferred him over to trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. Swag Daddy also won the Damon Runyon Stakes here on Dec. 4.

Gulfstream Park: Force Freeze gets morning off

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Another big name whose scheduled work got cancelled as a result of the four breakdowns during training hours on Saturday was Breeders’ Cup Sprint runner-up Force Freeze. Trainer Peter Walder had penciled in an easy three-furlong breeze for Force Freeze’s first work since he rejoined his stable last week.

Gulfstream Park: Mucho Macho Man has work canceled

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - A rash of training mishaps here Saturday also affected Mucho Macho Man, whose scheduled half-mile workout was aborted an eighth of a mile after it began. Mucho Macho Man had completed an opening furlong in 11.78 seconds and was moving smoothly into the far turn when exercise rider Nick Petro Jr. was forced to rein the horse in and angle him to the middle of the track to avoid a horse who had broken down along the inside rail midway around the bend.

Heart Butte, a much-improved colt since blinkers were added to his equipment four starts ago, outfought Thunder Lord in deep stretch to collect his fourth straight victory and second consecutive stakes in Saturday’s $75,000 Auld Lang Syne at Parx Racing.

Santa Anita: Baffert-trained maiden winner Fed Biz earns stakes shot

Fed Biz, a $950,000 yearling purchase, won a one-mile maiden race for 2-year-olds on Friday at Santa Anita, a performance likely to lead to a stakes appearance in his next start.

Ridden by Rafael Bejarano, Fed Biz stalked the quick pace of Where’s Henry, took the lead on the turn and won by 1 3/4 lengths in 1:35.48.

“He had every reason to stop and he rebroke,” winning trainer Bob Baffert said. “We’ve always thought a lot of this colt. He showed he’s a real deal. That was exciting.”

Aqueduct: Callmetony claimed just before turning 11

The claiming epidemic is so widespread at Aqueduct  this winter that two claims were put in Friday for the now 11-year-old Callmetony. Joe Imperio won a two-way shake over David Jacobson, nabbing him for $7,500 from owner Roddy Valente and trainer Bruce Levine.

Callmetony finished fourth in Friday’s first race, which was the 77th start of his career.

A race for $7,500 claimers carries a $29,000 purse with the winner earning $17,400.

Gulfstream Park: Hansen picks up the pace for Holy Bull

Hansen has resumed training after a short break following his wire-to-wire victory in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Breeders’ Cup Juvenile winner Hansen turned in his first serious work Saturday since arriving in south Florida, going a half-mile in 48.60 seconds before galloping out five-eighths in 1:03.60 under the cloak of darkness shortly after the Gulfstream Park racetrack opened for training at 5:45 a.m.

Hansen, who capped off a perfect 2-year-old campaign with a gritty head victory over Union Rags in the Juvenile, had barely gotten out of a gallop when he breezed a half-mile in 54 the previous week.

Aqueduct: Shkspeare Shaliyah will try dirt in Count Fleet

Shkspeare Shaliyah rallies to take the Pilgrim, but his connections would have to pay a $100,000 supplemental fee for him to go to the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Already a graded stakes winner on turf, Shkspeare Shaliyah will be given the opportunity to prove himself on dirt when he starts in Saturday’s $150,000 Count Fleet Stakes at Aqueduct.

The Count Fleet, run at a mile and 70 yards over the inner track, is the first stakes for 3-year-old males scheduled in New York in 2012.

At 2, Shkspeare Shaliyah won 2 of 4 starts on turf, including the Grade 3 Pilgrim Stakes at Belmont. He then finished ninth, beaten 6 1/2 lengths by Wrote, in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf at Churchill Downs in November.
