Johannesburg looking to rebound

Johannesburg will attempt to atone for his Kentucky Derby debacle in Saturday's Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes at Royal Ascot against a field of older horses that includes the American sprint star Caller One.

The Golden Jubilee, run over a straightaway six furlongs on turf, is the feature race on the fifth and final day of the Royal Ascot meeting.

Johannesburg, unraced since finishing eighth in the Kentucky Derby, faces 15 others. Trained by Aidan O'Brien, Johannesburg is seeking his first win since the Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Belmont Park last October.

Rock of Gibraltar can't stop winning

ASCOT, England - Rock of Gibraltar, the European miling sensation, won his fifth straight Group 1 race with a 1 3/4-length score Tuesday in the St James's Palace Stakes on opening day at Royal Ascot.

Showing good speed at the furlong pole, Rock of Gibraltar outfinished Landseer. The winner went off as a 4-5 favorite. Both horses are trained by Aidan O'Brien.

Banks Hill, Nayef to battle at Ascot

LONDON - Uncertainty is the order of the day for the Group 1 Prince of Wales Stakes, the feature race on Wednesday, the second day of Royal Ascot in England.

Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf winner Banks Hill and Dubai Sheema Classic winner Nayef are favored over 12 others in the 1 1/4-mile race, but both have concerns with the surface.

The going at Ascot is currently good to soft, and connections of both the favorites have expressed a preference for faster ground. Both would benefit from improvement in the course, but have performed well on softer surfaces in the past.

Falbrav looks best in Milan

British, German, and French raiders are among the seven runners for the Group 1 Gran Premio di Milano, over 1 1/2 miles at San Siro in Milan, Italy, on Sunday. But for once, the Italians have a horse good enough to handle the challenge: Falbrav.

A son of Fairy King, Falbrav has won four of his five races since finishing second to Morshdi in last year's Italian Derby. He showed that he is still improving when he beat the Godolphin-owned Ekraar in the Group 1 Premio Presidente della Repubblica, over 1 1/4 miles at the Capannelle in Rome on May 12.

Germany's breeders say nein to drugs

NEW YORK - A funny thing happened on the way to the finish lines of the three 1 1/2-mile classics run in England and America this past weekend.

In all three races - the English Oaks, the Epsom Derby, and the Belmont Stakes - two horses outstripped all of their other rivals by wide margins. You needed the patience of Job to wait for the arrivals of the third-place finisher in each case.

French Oaks a contentious affair

The European classic scene moves back to France Sunday to the elegant surroundings of Chantilly for a wide open renewal of the Prix de Diane or, as it is better known in the English-speaking world, the French Oaks.

Fifteen 3-year-old fillies will line up for the $475,000 Group 1 contest which will be run at 1 5/16 miles on the idyllic racecourse graced by not one, but two, 17th Century castles. Just who will crowned the Thoroughbred queen of France is a moot question, however, as seven of the evenly matched contestants are coming off stakes victories.
