Schutz packs 1-2 punch in Derby

Leading German trainer Andreas Schutz would appear to have all bases covered in Sunday's $392,000 German Derby at Hamburg where he will saddle co-favorites Salve Regina and Next Desert.

Salve Regina, a full sister to 2000 German Derby winner Samum, is attempting to become the first filly to win the 1 1/2-mile classic since Borgia in 1997. Salve Regina, an undefeated daughter of Monsun and 2 1/2-length winner of the German Oaks on June 9, certainly has the right team behind her, as Schutz trained both Samum and Borgia.

Equerry a threat in Eclipse

Hawk Wing, beaten but unbowed after a pair of second-place finishes behind stablemates Rock of Gibraltar in the 2000 Guineas and High Chaparral in the Epsom Derby, takes on his elders in the 1 1/4-mile Group 1 Eclipse Stakes at Sandown Park on Saturday.

But Hawk Wing, trained by Aidan O'Brien, may have to settle for second-best again, as Godolphin is sending out the undefeated Equerry, who rates the choice in spite of the 11 pounds he must spot Hawk Wing on the British scale of weights.

France: Khalkevi wins; trip to U.S. next

Khalkevi made amends for a disappointing display in the Prix du Jockey-Club, winning the Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris at Longchamp by a head over Shaanmer.

Castle Gandolfo was withdrawn because of an abnormal blood count, as were the other two Aidan O'Brien-trained runners on the card for the same reason. The scratch left a field of six.

Khalkevi rallied from two furlongs out to pick off Shaanmer in the shadow of the wire. Without Connexion finished third.

Johannesburg flops; may be retired

Johannesburg's career took another downward lurch when he could finish only ninth of 12 behind Malhub in the Group 1 Golden Jubilee Stakes, over six furlongs, at Royal Ascot on Saturday. He may well have run his last race, said his trainer, Aidan O'Brien.

The American sprinter Caller One was scratched after having been found to have a throat infection the previous day.

Sophisticat takes Coronation

Sophisticat produced an amazing turn of foot in the final furlong to win the Group 1 Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot from what looked an impossible position on Friday.

Ridden by Mick Kinane, Sophisticat gave Aidan O'Brien his third winner of the meeting.

As Sophisticat attempted to rally in the straight of the mile race, she found herself six lengths back and behind a wall of horses. Zenda, meanwhile, had set sail for home at the furlong pole and looked to have the race won, but Sophisticat burst clear and ran Zenda down.

Fabre colt heads G.P. de Paris

Focus on the European racing scene crosses the English channel from Royal Ascot to Paris on Sunday, when the highlight on the Longchamp card is the Juddmonte Grand Prix de Paris. A 10-furlong Group 1 race for 3-year-olds, it has attracted a field of seven.

Shaanmer is the likely favorite for trainer Andre Fabre. Unbeaten in three starts as a juvenile, he most recently dead-heated for second behind Rouvres in the Group 1 Prix Jean Prat on June 2.
