British and French trios vie in Morny

It will be the Battle of Agincourt all over again at Deauville on Sunday when three British-trained colts challenge three French-trained fillies in the six-furlong Group 1 Prix Morny.

But unlike in the medieval battle depicted by Shakespeare in Henry V, the French should emerge victorious this time, as Loving Kindness should show the British invaders no such thing. A 2-year-old daughter of Seattle Slew out of 1993 Morny winner Coup de Genie, Loving Kindness is coming off a resounding four-length course-and-distance thrashing of colts in the Group 3 Prix de Cabourg on Aug. 3.

British sprinter Kyllachy takes Nunthorpe Stakes

Kyllachy came from last to first to land the five-furlong Group 1 Nunthorpe Stakes at York on Thursday.

For Kyllachy, it was his fourth victory in five starts this year. A son of Pivotal trained by Henry Candy, he has shown a consistency rare in the ranks of British sprinters. He had previously taken the Group 3 Palace House Stakes and the Group 2 Temple Stakes, both at the Nunthorpe distance.

Her five-length trouncing of Italian Oaks winner Guadalupe came in a fast time of 2:26.74 for 1 1/2 miles. Group 1 juvenile winner Sulk ran third while Kazzia, winner of the 1000 Guineas and English Oaks and the 6-5 favorite, faded to fourth.

Islington can take Yorkshire Oaks

Kazzia and Islington will hook up in a highly competitive renewal of the Group 1 Yorkshire Oaks on Wednesday in England. The unbeaten Kazzia, winner of both the 1000 Guineas and the English Oaks, will be a slight favorite over recent Nassau Stakes winner Islington.

But Islington is the selection despite having finished 18 lengths behind Kazzia in the Oaks. The ground was soft at Epsom that day, and Islington showed how much she prefers good to firm ground with her four-length romp in the 1 1/4-mile Group 1 Nassau.

Banks Hill's Cup goal unclear

Banks Hill returned to her winning ways with an authoritative victory in the one-mile Group 1 Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville, France on Sunday, raising questions about whether her Breeders' Cup target will be the Mile or a defense of her Filly and Mare Turf title.

After the race, Teddy Beckett, French stable manager for Juddmonte Farms, said that Banks Hill's ultimate objective would be "a race on Breeders' Cup Day."

Banks Hill facing males again

Banks Hill, withdrawn from the Prix d'Astarte last week because of the soft ground, steps back into Group 1 company against colts Sunday for the Prix Jacques le Marois at Deauville.

Third in both the Prix d'Ispahan and the Prince of Wales's Stakes, Banks Hill is still seeking her first victory against males. Her chief rival from the opposite sex in the one-mile Marois will be the inconsistent Ispahan winner Best of the Bests, who has since finished unplaced in the Group 2 Queen Anne Stakes.

Two weeks key for Sakhee

Sakhee will be given two weeks to prove to Godolphin that his shocking defeat in the Prix Gontaut-Biron on Saturday was only an aberration.

Sakhee, the defending Arc de Triomphe champion, returned from Deauville to his stall at Saeed bin Suroor's Newmarket yard on Monday morning in good order. Preliminary tests indicated that he was suffering no ill effects from his weekend exertions.

Three look good at Deauville

Shaanmer heads a competitive field of 10 lining up for Thursday's 1 1/4-mile Group 2 Prix Guillaume d'Ornano for 3-year-olds at Deauville.

A Darshaan colt trained by Andre Fabre, Shaanmer was undefeated as a 2-year-old and has been heartbreakingly close in his last two starts. He was beaten by just a neck by Rouvres in the 1 1/8-mile, Group 1 Prix Jean Prat on June 2, and by only a head by Khalkevi in the 1 1/4-mile Group 1 Grand Prix de Paris three weeks later.
