Peslier, injured, may miss Arc

Olivier Peslier, who broke a collarbone in a spill at Saint-Cloud in France on Wednesday, will be replaced by Richard Hughes aboard Banks Hill in Sunday's Prix du Moulin de Longchamp.

That is, Hughes will ride Banks Hill if she runs. The going at Longchamp on Thursday was soft, and trainer Andre Fabre has repeatedly stated that his filly would not run on that type of ground. Hughes is familiar with Banks Hill, having ridden her to second-place finishes in both last year's Moulin and Prix Jacques le Marois.

Hawk Wing, Grandera top Irish Champion

Hawk Wing is the horse to beat in Saturday's Irish Champion Stakes, a 1 1/4-mile Group 1 contest at Leopardstown that will have an enormous impact on the balance of this autumn's international racing season.

A 3-year-old Woodman colt, Hawk Wing is one of three horses entered by Aidan O'Brien in the $1.09 million event, although O'Brien's Epsom and Irish Derby winner, High Chaparral, will almost certainly be held out in favor of an Arc de Triomphe prep in the Prix Niel next Sunday at Longchamp.

Marienbard's second foray into Germany was again a winning one as the Godolphin 5-year-old cruised to a 2 1/2-length win in the $854,500 Group 1 Grosser Preis von Baden.

Frankie Dettori put the 2.80-1 Marienbard on the lead shortly after entering the 2 1/2-furlong stretch for a comfortable triumph over German Oaks winner Salve Regina. The time for the 1 1/2 miles on good to soft ground was 2:34.93.

Waiting for a 2-year-old leader

With many of Aidan O'Brien's best juveniles shelved because of the virus that has hit Ballydoyle, and with David Loder taking his time with his Maktoum youngsters, putting the European 2-year-old scene into perspective is a problematic undertaking.

At this time last year, Johannesburg was already winging his way to the European and North American juvenile championships with victories in the Norfolk Stakes, Anglesey Stakes, Phoenix Stakes, and Prix Morny.

Checkit faces Lacroix challenge

The heavily campaigned Checkit travels from England to Baden-Baden in southwest Germany to challenge six locally trained juveniles in the Group 2 Maurice Lacroix-Trophy on Friday.

Checkit's third-place finish in his seventh start, the Group 2 Richmond Stakes, behind subsequent Group 1 Prix Morny winner Elusive City, makes him the standout in the six-furlong Lacroix. His German rivals are all lightly raced, however, and one of them may improve enough to deny him the prize.

Van Nistlerooy wins third straight

Van Nistlerooy extended his unbeaten streak to three in the Group 2 Futurity Stakes at the Curragh. The win came as a welcome relief to Aidan O'Brien, as his virus-plagued Ballydoyle yard is not expected to be back at full strength for another two weeks.

The world's most expensive yearling purchase last year at $6.4 million, Van Nistlerooy prevailed by a neck over Chappel Crescent as the even-money favorite in a field of eight. His time for the seven furlongs on good to yielding ground was 1:24.30.
