Cesario takes Japanese Oaks

Cesario came with her usual late run to win the $2.1 million Yushun Himba, or Japanese Oaks, at Tokyo on Sunday with a narrow neck victory over Air Messiah.

Sent off as the 1-2 choice in a field of 18 fillies going 1 1/2 miles, Cesario in victory was paying a big compliment to Rhein Kraft, the filly who had ended her undefeated record by a neck in the Japanese 2000 Guineas on April 10 and who later defeated colts in the Grade 1 NHK Mile Cup.

Derby winners' bloodlines thinning?

NEW YORK - The Derby, be it English or Kentucky, was designed to serve as a leading supplier of new blood to the Thoroughbred industry.

That was certainly the case with the original English version throughout the 19th century when winners such as Whalebone, Emilius, Bay Middleton, The Flying Dutchman, Macaroni, Hermit, and Persimmon had a profound effect on the breed. Even Epsom Derby losers such as Sultan, the 1819 runner-up who would sire eight classic winners, including Stockwell, added immeasurably to the breed.

O'Brien to saddle four in Guineas

Aidan O'Brien will saddle four of the nine starters in Saturday's $485,000 Irish 2000 Guineas at the Curragh, but Footstepsinthesand is not one of them.

The winner of the English 2000 Guineas Stakes on April 30 picked up a stone bruise during his victorious excursion to Newmarket. He subsequently missed a few days of training and was not quite ready to go for a Guineas double. Thus, O'Brien's first-string rider Kieren Fallon will switch to Newmarket Guineas fourth Oratorio while Johnny Murtagh, who rode Oratorio at Newmarket, takes the reins on Showdance.
