Two Dubai races now $5 million

The world's richest day of racing just got richer.

The Dubai Racing Club announced Friday that it was increasing the prize money of the Dubai Duty Free and the Dubai Sheema Classic from $2 miilion to $5 million each, with first prizes of $3 million each. As a result, the six Thoroughbred races on the Dubai World Cup card, which will be run March 26, 2006, will be worth a total of $21 million, and the 1 1/8-mile Duty Free and the 1 1/2-mile Sheema Classic become the two richest turf races in the world.

Azamour, shown winning the King George, seeks his second consecutive Irish Champion Stakes victory on Saturday.

Azamour will seek a second successive victory in the $1.23 million Irish Champion Stakes at Leopardstown on Saturday, and Scorpion will start as the odds-on favorite in the St. Leger Stakes at Doncaster.

Leopardstown's annual 1 1/4-mile showcase of Group 1 excellence, the Irish Champion Stakes, has a roll call of recent winners second to none. Pilsudski, Swain, Daylami, Giant's Causeway, Fantastic Light, and High Chaparral preceded Azamour's half-length victory over Norse Dancer in last year's edition.

Ouija Board will miss prep at Longchamp

Ouija Board has been deemed not ready for Sunday's Prix Vermeille at Longchamp by trainer Ed Dunlop, and she will miss the race, which was to be her prep for the Breeders' Cup.

The defending Filly and Mare Turf champ, Ouija Board has suffered a series of setbacks this season, and after she worked at Newmarket on Tuesday morning, Dunlop and owner Lord Derby decided that she needed more time to recover.

Goodricke good enough in Sprint Cup

David Loder, who is to retire from training at the end of the year at the age of just 41 owing to health problems, and Jamie Spencer, who looks almost certain to become English champion jockey for the first time this season, teamed up to land the Haydock Park Sprint Cup with Goodricke on Saturday.

A 14-1 chance in a field of 17 for this Group 1 contest run over a straight six furlongs on good turf, Goodricke clocked a time of 1:10.87 as he came with his usual late burst to beat La Cucuracha by a length with Ashdown Express a length farther back in third.
