BUDAPEST - Her statue stands, in grand isolation, at the entrance to the old grandstand of the racetrack in Budapest, an echo of the time when Hungarian horses could hold their own with the best of England, France, and Ireland. Her name, Kincsem, means My Treasure, or My Jewel, or My Dear, depending on your mood, and she is all of these to racing in Hungary, a sport that bears the same 20th-century scars as the proud Magyar nation itself.

Fallon banned from riding in Britain

Kieren Fallon has been banned from riding in England, Scotland, and Wales after the British Horseracing Regulatory Authority ruled on Friday that his license to ride would not be renewed because of race-fixing charges filed against him earlier in the week.

Quinn, British rider, retires

Richard Quinn, long regarded as Britain's leading "lightweight" rider for his ability to make 110 pounds, announced his retirement from the saddle on Wednesday. The 27-year veteran, who appeared in form lines as T R Quinn as his first name is Thomas, hangs up his tack at the age of 44.

Charged trainer may carry on

Alan Berry, the Lancaster-based English trainer who is one of 11 people charged by London police with conspiracy to commit fraud, has been granted permission to continue training while the investigation into alleged race-fixing continues.

Britain's Horseracing Regulatory Authority issued the decisions Wednesday after a Tuesday hearing . The racing authority decided that, because any possible trial in the matter will not start until at least the spring of 2007, that it would be inappropriate to ban him from his trade.

Overseas runners strong in Irish Derby

The English, French, and Italian Derby form will go on trial Sunday at The Curragh as overseas challengers account for six of the 13 runners in the $1.7 million Irish Derby.

Dragon Dancer, Dylan Thomas, and Best Alibi - who finished second, third, and sixth in the English Derby - face the first two home in the French Derby (Darsi and Best Name), while French champion trainer Andre Fabre is represented by Gentlewave, winner of the Italian version.

Brass Hat's DQ from World Cup upheld by Dubai racing officials

The Emirates Racing Associates upheld the disqualification of Brass Hat from the March 25 Dubai World Cup on Tuesday after hearing an appeal by the owner and trainer of the colt.

The disqualification will cost the colt's owner, Fred Bradley, the $1.2 million second-place share of the World Cup's $6 million purse. Stewards at Nad Al Sheba Racecourse, where the World Cup was run, disqualified Brass Hat after the colt tested positive for a banned corticosteroid following the race.

Deep Impact victorious at Kyoto

Deep Impact signed off in Japan with a four-length victory in the Takarazuka Kinen at Kyoto on Sunday. Travel plans will now be finalized for his trip to France and the Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe on Oct. 1.

The 1-10 favorite in the 13-horse field, Deep Impact raced in 12th position early under Yutaka Take. He began to edge forward inside the final half-mile, but still had several lengths to make up with two furlongs to run. Deep Impact caught Balance of Game with 150 yards to run and drew clear to win by four lengths.
