Lawman took no prisoners at Chantilly in France on Wednesday as he drew off to a 2o1/2-length victory in the Group 3, $108,000 Prix de Guiche, establishing himself as a major French Derby contender in the process.
Champs Elysees added another feather to the richly plumed headdress of his dam, Hasili, at Longchamp on Tuesday as he earned his first black-type victory with a sharp score in the Group 3, $108,000 Prix d'Hedouville.
A 4-year-old son of Danehill, trained by Andre Fabre for Khalid Abdullah, Champs Elysees won going away under Stephane Pasquier at 5-2 in his seasonal debut, defeating Mister Conway by 1 1/2 lengths. He ran the 1 1/2 miles in 2:30.80 on soft ground.
Devastated by the injury that caused Teofilo to miss Saturday's 2000 Guineas, trainer Jim Bolger will look for consolation on Sunday when he saddles the favored Finsceal Beo in Newmarket's filly equivalent, the 1000 Guineas Stakes, a classic Group 1 mile worth $700,000.
Finsceal Beo, the European juvenile filly champion, is one of six of the 23 runners in the 1000 Guineas who will be making her season debut.
LEXINGTON, Ky. - Queen Elizabeth II of England will be at Churchill Downs on Derby Day. If you're on the grounds at the same time, this could be your big chance to greet not just racing royalty, but actual royalty. If you're standing in the mutuel line and the queen approaches you to ask what the pick six carryover is, what should you do? Here are a few hints.
Owner Michael Tabor on Monday supplemented his undefeated French-trained colt, US Ranger, to Saturday's 2000 Guineas for a fee of $50,000. The addition of US Ranger, a Kentucky-bred son of Danzig, to the Guineas field means that Saturday's classic mile at Newmarket could be one of the strongest in recent years.
Trained by Jean-Claude Rouget, US Ranger aired in three 2-year-old starts at Bordeaux and Toulouse. After Tabor purchased a 50 percent interest this spring, he added luster to his promise with a four-length victory in the Prix Djebel at Maisons-Laffitte on April 11.
Dylan Thomas served notice that he will be a major force in Europe and the world this year with a handy two-length score in the $409,000 Prix Ganay at Longchamp on Sunday.
Group 1 victories don't come much easier than they did for Dylan Thomas, although it must be said that he was beating what appeared to be a Group 2 field in the 1o5/16-mile Ganay. Never worse than fourth, Dylan Thomas, a 4-year-old son of Danehill, was trapped briefly entering the 2 1/2-furlong stretch but rallied to lead 150 yards from the line under a sitting-chilly ride from Christophe Soumillon.
