Alandi rallies late in Irish St. Leger

Yeats was a grave disappointment Saturday at the Curragh as Alandi came late to win the Group 1, $399,000 Irish St. Leger, defeating longshot Clowance by a half-length with longtime leader Schiaparelli third.

Running for the first time since June 18 when he won his fourth consecutive Ascot Gold Cup, the 4-1 Yeats tracked Schiaparelli's pace but gave up the ghost a half-mile from home. The shorter distance of the Irish St. Leger at 1 3/4 miles and the soft ground were to his disadvantage as he weakened to finish last of eight, beaten an astonishing 60 lengths by the winner.

Yeats facing tough trio

Yeats will make his first start since winning his fourth Ascot Gold Cup when he faces seven rivals in the Group 1, $399,000 Irish St. Leger at the Curragh on Saturday. While the distance of 1 3/4 miles is six furlongs shorter than that of the Gold Cup, Yeats - an 8-year-old son of Sadler's Wells trained by Aidan O'Brien - won this race two years ago and has run well fresh in the past. Johnny Murtagh will be aboard.

The world's best stayer, he will be severely challenged by three dangerous foes, though.

Gitano Hernando, his trip to the Belmont Stakes canceled because of injury after his unlucky second-place finish in the Group 3 Dee Stakes at Chester on May 8, returns to action at Doncaster on Wednesday in a 1 1/4-mile, 60-yard conditions race as a prequel to a possible tilt at the Breeders' Cup Marathon.
