Viridine, Jungle Edge renew acquaintances in Bletchingly at Caulfield

Jungle Edge and Viridine, the first two finishers of the Group 3 Sir John Monash Stakes on July 11, meet for the fourth time this year in Saturday’s Group 3 Bletchingly Stakes at six furlongs at Caulfield Racecourse in Australia.

In the Monash Stakes at 5 1/2 furlongs at Caulfield, Jungle Edge, the 5-2 favorite, beat 3-1 Viridine by three-quarters of a length. Jungle Edge was within a length of the lead throughout and had first run on Viridine, who closed steadily but was held.

O'Brien triple-teams Enable in King George

The Yorkshire Oaks (above) was one of three Group 1 wins for Enable in 2019.

The boys, three of them, all trained by Aidan O’Brien, will try to beat Enable on Saturday at Ascot.

The race, an historic Group 1, is the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes; it has only four entrants, one of them the queen of European middle-distance racing.

Australia: Coming Around starts anew in Mildura Cup

Since Coming Around extended his winning streak to three races in early February, the 4-year-old Australian-bred gelding has been transferred from trainers Grant and Alana Williams on the West Coast of Australia to Brett Stanley in the Victorian countryside, north of Melbourne.

Grant Williams recently moved several leading runners from his stable near Perth to Stanley’s base Victoria in preparation for major stakes in that part of the country in coming months. Those horses will run for Williams.

Golly I’m Lucky has had a perfect comeback in Australia in the last month, going unbeaten in two six-furlong handicaps after a layoff since December.

A 5-year-old Australian-bred gelding, Golly I’m Lucky has won 5 of 18 starts; the recent wins are the first time he has won consecutive races.

There is strong potential for a third straight win in a six-furlong handicap Thursday at Kembla Grange. Golly I’m Lucky, trained at Kembla Grange by Theresa Bateup, is the joint topweight at 132 pounds with Baracus and Esteem Spirit in a field of 11.

Australia: What a Girl gets more ground in Canterbury handicap

The Australian 3-year-old filly What a Girl is a nose away from having two wins in her first three starts.

On July 4 at Newcastle Racecourse, What a Girl rallied from last in a field of 10 to just miss winning a handicap at 7 1/2 furlongs. What a Girl closed from fourth to win her debut in a maiden race at seven furlongs in April at 25-1.

If longer races are vital for her success, What a Girl has an excellent chance to win for the second time in her career in a handicap for fillies and mares at 7 3/4 furlongs on Wednesday at Canterbury Park in Sydney.
