Ushba Tesoro, Senor Buscador have Breeders' Cup Classic goal

Dubai Racing Club
Senor Buscador will get some time off after his third-place finish in the Dubai World Cup before a summer and fall campaign.

Senor Buscador’s late surge carried him past Ushba Tesoro to win the Saudi Cup in late February, but on Saturday in the Dubai World Cup it was Ushba Tesoro’s stretch run that pushed him past Senor Buscador for second money, both horses well beaten by Laurel River.

It was a costly neck, the difference between place and show in the $12 million World Cup about $600,000.

“We’re very proud of him and a little disappointed he didn’t get second yesterday. He definitely wasn’t going to beat Laurel River,” trainer Todd Fincher said in a Sunday text message.

No further plans for Laurel River in 2024

Dubai Racing Club
Laurel River romps to an 8 1/2-length victory in the $12 million Dubai World Cup.

Laurel River made the first seven starts of his career in America and, as he showed winning the Dubai World Cup on Saturday by a record 8 1/2 lengths, is one of the world’s best horses on dirt, the surface where American racing reigns supreme. But do not expect to see Laurel River show up in America again anytime soon.

Laurel River was sent to trainer Bhupat Seemar by owner-breeder Juddmonte Farms last fall with the intention of keeping him in Dubai, Seemar said in a Sunday phone interview, and at this point, there has been no suggestion that plan has changed.

Japan: Bellagio Opera gets Grade 1 win in Osaka Hai

Rebel's Romance uses new tactics to return to form in Sheema Classic

Dubai Racing Club/Liesl King
Rebel's Romance took Saturday's Sheema Classic at Meydan, his first Group or Grade 1 victory since the 2022 Breeders' Cup Turf.

A disappointing 2023 campaign is behind Rebel’s Romance. The well-traveled 6-year-old is in the midst of a perfect start in 2024, including a win in Saturday’s Group 1 Sheema Classic at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai.

Well-known in the United States for winning the Breeders’ Cup Turf at Keeneland in 2022, Rebel’s Romance won the fourth Grade 1 or Group 1 race of his career in the $6 million Sheema Classic at 1 1/2 miles due largely to a tactical ride by jockey William Buick.

Tuz overcomes trouble to shock in Golden Shaheen

Dubai Racing Club/Liesl King
Saturday’s victory in the Dubai Golden Shaheen at Meydan was the first Group 1 victory for Tuz.

A few incidents of trouble could not prevent Tuz from a commanding upset win in the Group 1 Golden Shaheen Sprint at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai on Saturday.

Racing prominently on the inside, Tuz closed from third in the final quarter-mile to take the lead with less than a furlong remaining. Tuz quickly burst clear to prevail by 6 1/2 lengths over 9-1 Don Frankie.

California Spangle enjoys cutback, sets course record in Al Quoz Sprint

Dubai Racing Club/Liesl King
California Spangle set a course record of 1:07.50 in Saturday’s Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan.

Prior to Saturday’s Group 1 Al Quoz Sprint at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai, California Spangle had not raced at six furlongs since early 2022.

The veteran gelding not only took to a distance shorter than his recent starts, but did so in the best performance of his 25-race career.

Ridden by Brenton Avdulla, California Spangle (who paid $6.10 in American pools) was prominent throughout the race on a straightaway course and held off a late threat from 2-1 Star of Mystery to win by three-quarters of a length.

Japan: Defections leave Tastiera in driver's seat for Osaka Hai

Tastiera was the champion 3-year-old male of 2023 in Japan, a season highlighted by a win in the Grade 1 Japanese Derby last May.

Those credentials make Tastiera an exciting prospect for the older horse division this year, beginning with an appearance in Sunday’s Grade 1 Osaka Hai at 1 1/4 miles on turf at Hanshin Racecourse. Unraced since December, Tastiera has an easier assignment than expected with the defection of several of Japan’s leading runners to Group 1 races at Meydan Racecourse in Dubai on Saturday.
