A U.S. District Court has approved a settlement agreement reached between the New Jersey Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association and a number of professional and collegiate sports associations that will award the horsemen’s group a $3.4 million bond.

Jockey Club orders 'offensive' name changed; Guillot banned

Eric Guillot ended his training career in controversy on Friday with an offensively named horse winning at Aqueduct.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – When a horse named Grape Soda won Friday’s first race at Aqueduct it was to be the final horse sent out by Eric Guillot after a 30-year training career. That the horse won and sent Guillot into retirement a winner was sort of a neat story.

Until it wasn’t.

Guillot named the horse Grape Soda to mock Ken Rudulph, a Black analyst for the Television Games Network whom Guillot does not like. Further, Grape Soda is a racist term for a drink that is stereotypically associated with Black people.

New York Gov. Cuomo pushes for mobile sports betting

New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo will ask the legislature to legalize mobile sports betting as part of his State of the State address scheduled for next week, his office said in a release.

The proposal would expand sports wagering statewide, beyond the limited bricks-and-mortar locations where it is currently available upstate. The proposal also makes no mention of allowing state racing interests to capitalize on the expansion.

Despite pandemic, U.S. handle almost flat in 2020

The Triple Crown races, which were run in front of virtually empty grandstands, suffered precipitous declines in handle, but overall handle for 2020 dropped just 1 percent.

Total handle on U.S. Thoroughbred races during the coronavirus-ravaged year of 2020 was down 1.0 percent compared to 2019, according to figures released by Equibase on Tuesday, while average handle per race soared 29.4 percent.

Jockey C. J. McMahon charged with attempted murder

Charles Jantzen “C. J.” McMahon, a promising jockey whose career has sputtered over the past several years, was arrested Saturday in Lafayette, La., and charged with attempted murder, along with illegal drug and weapon possession, according to records from the county sheriff.

McMahon was issued the charges following a traffic stop, according to records of the Lafayette sheriff’s office. The records said that an active warrant had been issued for McMahon’s arrest.

Mucho Gusto, Charlatan lead invitees to Pegasus World Cup Invitational

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – As expected, defending winner Mucho Gusto and his talented stablemate Charlatan top a list of 12 horses invited to the $3 million Pegasus World Cup Invitational at Gulfstream Park. A dozen turf specialists also have been invited to the $1 Pegasus Turf Invitational, with both races to be decided here Jan. 23.

Breeders’ Cup Dirt Mile winner Knicks Go and 2020 Pegasus World Cup runner-up Mr Freeze are also among the invitees to this year’s edition of the 1 1/8-mile Pegasus. Four other horses were placed on a reserve invitation list.
