2021 Eclipse Awards to be held Feb. 10 at Santa Anita

The Eclipse Awards ceremony will have a new location next year.

After eight straight years of being held at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla. (last year’s event was virtual due to the pandemic), the ceremony will be held in 2022 at Santa Anita Park in Southern California, the organizers of the ceremony announced. The date of the ceremony will be Feb. 10, a Thursday.

Both Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita are owned by 1/ST, the company formerly known as The Stronach Group. The Eclipse Awards ceremony was held at Gulfstream from 2013-20.

Banke elected as Breeders’ Cup chairman

Barbara Banke has overseen Stonestreet Farm since the death of her husband, Jess Jackson, in April 2011.

Barbara Banke, owner of Stonestreet Farms, was elected as board chairman of the Breeders' Cup at a board of directors meeting Friday night.

Banke, who was elected to serve a two-year term, becomes the first woman to chair Breeders' Cup Limited. She succeeds Fred Hertrich III, who served as chairman from 2017 until Friday. Antony Beck of Gainesway Farm was elected as vice chairman to serve a two-year term with Banke.

NYRA schedules hearings for Baffert, Vitali under new protocols

The New York Racing Association said it has adopted protocols to conduct hearings against licensed racing individuals and has issued notices of hearings under the new rules to trainers Bob Baffert and Marcus Vitali.

Asmussen to pay $563K in settlement with Labor Department

Steve Asmussen, the trainer who recently set the all-time wins record in U.S. Thoroughbred racing, has reached a settlement with the U.S. Department of Labor requiring him to pay $563,800 in back wages and penalties for failing to pay overtime wages to grooms and hotwalkers during a four-year period from 2016 to 2020, according to court records.

Kentucky Downs, NYRA at impasse over simulcasting contract

Kentucky Downs has resodded a good portion of its turf course this fall.

Kentucky Downs and the New York Racing Association have been unable to reach an agreement on a simulcasting contract for Kentucky Downs’s races, an impasse that will shut out NYRA patrons from the track’s signal and also result in a partial blackout of NYRA’s Saratoga signal in Kentucky, officials for both sides said Thursday.

Jockey Club committee recommends change to voided-claims policy

A committee of The Jockey Club has revised its recommended guidance on voided-claims policy to allow for the practice if a horse is placed on the veterinarian’s list within one hour of a race.

The revised recommendation from the Thoroughbred Safety Committee grew out of findings from the decade-long effort to collect data on racing injuries through the Equine Injury Database. Those findings have suggested that racing jurisdictions with voided-claim policies show statistically significant lower rates of fatalities, The Jockey Club said.

1/ST Content hires new television-simulcast chief

Greg Colvin, a former executive with a company that manages Instagram accounts, has been hired as the chief executive officer of 1/ST Content, the television and simulcast wagering unit of the company formerly known as The Stronach Group.

According to a release, Colvin will work with Jason Wilson, the chief operating officer of 1/ST Content, “to further develop and support the ongoing transformation of the 1/ST Content brands into a modern and cohesive entity to attract and retain a new group of consumers.”
