Veterinarians appeal Indiana medication suspensions, say allegations are 'false'

Two veterinarians who have been issued 60-day suspensions by the Indiana Horse Racing Commission have appealed the penalties and requested a stay, according to one of the veterinarians.

Cyndi Loomis and Nicole Wettstein, both practitioners with Kentucky Equine Medical Associates, were issued the 60-day suspensions on Nov. 7. The ruling cited violations of a regulation that prohibit the possession of expired medications or mislabeled or unlabeled medications. The veterinarians appealed the suspensions on Monday, Loomis said.

Veterinarian sentenced to 50 months in prison for supplying illegal substances to trainers

Louis Grasso, a veterinarian who was indicted in 2020 along with six other prominent harness-racing participants, was sentenced on Tuesday to 50 months in prison and ordered to forfeit $412,000 for his role in supplying illegal substances to trainers, according to court records.

California sports-betting propositions voted down

Two propositions in California on Tuesday’s ballot that would have allowed sports betting were resoundingly shot down by voters.

Prop 26, which was supported by the racing industry and Indian tribes, was defeated at a roughly 70-30 split, in line with polls conducted prior to voting. The proposal would have allowed in-person sports betting at Del Mar, Golden Gate Fields, Los Alamitos and Santa Anita as well as Native American casinos.

U.S. handle drops nearly 5 percent in October

LEXINGTON, KY. -- Handle on U.S. Thoroughbred races fell 4.9 percent in October of this year when compared to the same month last year despite a 1.2 percent increase in races, according to figures released by Equibase on Friday.

October of this year and October of last year both had 10 weekend dates. There were 34 more races held in October of this year compared to October of last year. Average handle per race declined 6.1 percent, to $324,750.

HISA whip restrictions in place for Breeders' Cup

Gaming commission levies $2,000 fine on NYRA racing secretary

OZONE PARK, N.Y. -- The New York Gaming Commission fined Keith Doleshel, the racing secretary for the New York Racing Association, $2,000 for failure to conduct business in a professional manner, according to a ruling on the commission website.

Brad Maione, the spokesperson for the Gaming Commission, citing the possibility of Doleshel appealing the penalty, would not elaborate on the reason for the fine.

Churchill Downs Inc. net income declines 7.2 percent in third quarter

Churchill Downs Inc. had net income of $57.0 million in the third quarter of 2022, a 7.2 percent decline compared to the same quarter last year, according to financial statements released Wednesday.

Total revenues in the quarter were $383.1 million, down 2.5 percent from net revenue of $393.0 million in 2021. This year’s revenue number was negatively impacted by the shuttering of Churchill’s Arlington Park outside of Chicago.

HISA submits list of 1,400 substances to FTC for review

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority has submitted a document to the Federal Trade Commission classifying nearly 1,400 substances as either banned or controlled, a list that will form the foundation for the authority’s medication and anti-doping enforcement program.
