HISA puts Turf Paradise on notice over rail repairs

Turf Paradise has until March 31 to complete repairs to the track rails, or it faces cessation of its out-of-state signal.

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority has ordered Turf Paradise in Phoenix, Ariz., to make repairs to its rails by the end of March 31 or forfeit the ability to send its signal out-of-state until the repairs are completed, according to a ruling issued by an internal panel of board members at HISA.

NYRA approved to install synthetic surface at Belmont

NYRA is planning to install a one-mile synthetic track inside its two turf courses at Belmont Park.

A state regulatory board with oversight powers over the New York Racing Association on Wednesday approved a list of capital projects that includes the installation of a synthetic track at Belmont Park and the replacement of the structure holding the saddling stalls at Saratoga Race Course.

Kentucky sports betting bill passes House

The Kentucky House passed a bill on Tuesday that would give state racetracks the ability to offer sports betting, but the legislation is still just short of the votes needed to pass the Senate under rules for sessions held in odd-numbered years.

After passing in the House, the bill was sent to the Senate Standing Committee on Licensing and Occupations. If it passes out of the committee, the legislation could be put up for a vote in the full Senate, but it’s not clear if the Republican leadership will allow a vote if it does not have the support to pass, according to officials.

HISA, Jockeys' Guild to partner on mental-health resources for jockeys

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority will launch a program to provide mental-health resources to jockeys in partnership with The Jockeys’ Guild, the two organizations said Tuesday.

The program is being launched in the wake of the suicides of two young riders over the past three months, Avery Whisman, 23, and Alex Canchari, 29. Both had not ridden for at least several months prior to the suicides.
