Smuggler, champion filly, retired

Smuggler, the champion 3-year-old filly of 2005, has been retired from racing, trainer Shug McGaughey said Thursday. She will be bred to Awesome Again.

McGaughey said Smuggler was suffering from some bruising in a hind cannon bone and would not be able to make it back for any of the important races this fall. The filly?s owner, Ogden Mills Phipps, wants to breed her next year.

Lakland dispersal set for Oct. 15 at Saratoga

The New York Breeders' Sales Company will hold its fall mixed sale on Oct. 15 at 11 a.m. at Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. The one-day auction will feature the dispersal of horses from Lakland North as well as its first-ever select weanling session.

The weanling portion of the catalog numbers 70, most of them New York-breds, and the Lakland dispersal will consist of 79 horses.

The sale company will reimburse travel expenses for buyers who spend a specific amount on horses. More information is available at (518) 587-1555.

Empire head urges release of NYRA funds

A top official of Empire Racing Associates, one of four groups bidding for the franchise held by the New York Racing Association, has asked the state Non-Profit Racing Association Oversight Board to release funds promised to NYRA in a loan package last year, according to a copy of a letter distributed by Empire on Wednesday.

Symposium focuses on purses

The need for unity and concern for the future were the major themes at the first New Jersey Horse Industry Symposium, held Wednesday at Monmouth Park.

The symposium was the initial event for the New Jersey Horse Industry Alliance, a newly formed coalition that represents all aspects of the state's equine interests. The symposium started with Monmouth barn tours at 8 a.m. and concluded with comments from General Assembly Speaker Joe Roberts.

Official questions slots delay

The New York state comptroller has asked the state lottery division to explain why it has yet to approve the New York Racing Association's plans to operate a slot-machine casino at Aqueduct racetrack.

The request came in a letter dated Sept. 15 from State Comptroller Alan Hevesi to the lottery division's director, Nancy Palumbo, asking Palumbo to "make a decision about the proposal or offer guidance for any needed revisions." NYRA sent its proposal - a management contract between NYRA and the casino company MGM Grand - to the lottery for review four months ago.

Woodbine VP suspended for 3 years

The Ontario Racing Commission has suspended the license of Chris Evans, the vice president for Thoroughbred racing at Woodbine, for three years based on his conduct while involved in an extramarital affair with a commission employee, steward Linda Phelan.

The suspension, issued late Monday after three days of bitter hearings since June, will prohibit Evans from working in any Thoroughbred job that requires a license. As part of the ruling, Evans will remain under probation by the commission for one year should his license be reinstated.

Keeneland sale on record pace

There were no million-dollar lots by 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Keeneland September yearling auction's eighth of 14 sessions, but the sale remained on a record pace.

Tuesday's afternoon session-leader was Hip No. 2,630, a $250,000 Petionville filly out of So Unusual. Pope McLean's Crestwood Farm sold the filly as agent, and Taylor Stables was the buyer.

Barbaro has 'excellent week'

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro is showing continued improvement in his long recovery from a broken right hind leg and laminitis in his left hind, according to an update issued Tuesday from the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center in Kennett Square, Pa.

A 3-year-old Dynaformer colt, Barbaro remains in intensive care at the center, where he has been since shattering his right hind leg in the May 20 Preakness.

"He had an excellent week," said the center's chief surgeon, Dr. Dean Richardson.
