Senate unlikely to vote on slaughter bill

A bill that seeks to ban horse slaughter in the United States is unlikely to be voted on in the Senate this year, a spokesman for the bill's chief supporter, Sen. John Ensign, said Wednesday.

"Unfortunately, it doesn't look promising to get it done this year," said Jack Finn, the communications director for Ensign, a Republican from Nevada who is the co-sponsor of the Senate version of the legislation.

Barbaro's left hind hoof regrowing

Barbaro's left hind hoof, 80 percent of which was surgically removed in July after he developed the hoof disease laminitis, is regrowing.

The 2006 Kentucky Derby winner's left hind hoof has grown about 18 millimeters in the heel area, according to a release issued Tuesday by the University of Pennsylvania's New Bolton Center equine hospital.

"It has to grow at least three times that, which could take more than six months," noted the center's chief surgeon, Dr. Dean Richardson. "It's a very gradual process; the bottom of his foot has to completely heal as well."

Jockey insurance bill brought to House

Two U.S. representatives introduced a bill on Wednesday to the House floor that would redirect at least half of all horsemen's simulcasting revenue to state racing commissions in order to pay for insurance for jockeys and other track workers.

The bill is sponsored by Rep. Ed Whitfield, a Republican from Kentucky, and Rep. Bart Stupak, a Democrat from Michigan.

By one measure, simulcasting currently provides approximately $900 million a year - or 90 percent of all purse monies - to horsemen's groups.

Keeneland numbers still up

On a day when $20,000 to $60,000 prices were common, a $330,000 purchase at the Keeneland September yearling sale's 10th session Thursday reminded sellers that big money was still available in the open market.

Southern Equine Stables paid $330,000 late Thursday for the Claiborne Farm agency's Pulpit filly out of Audrey Paulina. The filly is a full sister to 2006 Canadian stakes-placed Pulpit's Treasure. At 5 p.m., she was Thursday's session leader in terms of price.
