Tattersalls sale breaks receipts record

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Group 2 winner Jewel in the Sand, offered in foal to Galileo, took top billing Wednesday at the Tattersalls December mares sale in Newmarket, England, at a session that saw sharp drops from last year.

Croom House Stud owner Denis Brosnan made the winning bid of 620,000 guineas, about $1,315,020 at Wednesday's exchange rate, for the session topper. Lisieux Stud was the seller.

Slots-enhanced purses hurting field sizes

TUCSON, Ariz. - In 2009, the number of Thoroughbred racing dates in Pennsylvania is expected to reach 650, nearly double the number in 2005. The reason for the expansion is the requirements of a law that legalized slot machines at seven racetracks in the state, despite the fact that at the time the law was passed, only two Thoroughbred tracks and two harness tracks existed in Pennsylvania.

Jockeys' Guild board votes to drop insurance

The board of directors of the Jockeys' Guild voted Monday to stop funding a health-care plan for its members effective at the beginning of 2008, according to the group.

The board voted to terminate the plan at the guild's annual meeting in Louisville, Ky. The guild's national manager, Terry Meyocks, had earlier informed the guild's members that the organization would be unable to fund the plan as a result of its bankruptcy filing earlier this year.

Fasig-Tipton sale hints at rebound

Fasig-Tipton Midlantic's two-day December mixed sale in Timonium, Md., which opened Sunday with declines across the board and a $40,000 session-topper, nudged the market ceiling up Monday with a $62,000 the session-leader at 6 p.m.

That was Hip No. 334, a weanling Golden Missile colt out of the Wild Zone mare Precious Queenie. Thomas J. Gallo III, agent, sold the colt to David Wade, agent. The chestnut colt is a three-quarter-brother to the five-time winner Not on My Turf, a son of Stephen Got Even.

Sheikh on spree at Tattersalls

Sheikh Mohammed al-Maktoum, who paid a world-record broodmare price of $10.5 million last month at Keeneland's November mixed auction, broke another record Monday when he paid 3.4 million guineas for Group 1 winner Satwa Queen at the Tattersalls December mare sale in England.

The price, about $7.3 million, beat the previous European filly in-training record of 3 million guineas, set last year at Tattersalls when London Thoroughbred Services bought Spinning Queen.
