Agreement keeps Aqueduct open

The New York Racing Association has reached an agreement with a state oversight board that will allow Aqueduct to conduct racing through Jan. 23, NYRA said on Monday.

Aqueduct would have been forced to shut down on Jan. 1 without the agreement, which was negotiated with the Non-Profit Racing Association Oversight Board. NYRA’s franchise to conduct racing at Aqueduct, Belmont, and Saratoga was set to expire on Tuesday.

In a statement, the oversight board confirmed that a "stipulation agreement" extending the franchise through Jan. 23 had been reached with NYRA.

Uncertainty remains over Aqueduct's status

New York Racing Association officials would not say with certainty Saturday that Aqueduct would stay open after Monday, Dec. 31, when NYRA's franchise to run three racetracks expires. NYRA has said it reached an agreement with the state to continue operating until Jan. 23, and on Saturday the New York State Racing and Wagering Board met to decide whether to approve the agreement. But the board determined that it did not have the power to rule on the agreement.

The New York Racing Association reached an agreement Thursday night with the state attorney general's office that is expected to avert a shutdown of Thoroughbred racing in New York and allow the association to operate Aqueduct until at least Jan. 23, officials said Friday.

Kentucky looks at steroids

The Kentucky Horse Racing Authority is seeking to adopt rules that would regulate the use of four commonly administered anabolic steroids and ban all others in racehorses, the top official of the authority said Tuesday.

The rule, to be based on a recommendation from a national drug-research group, would allow the use of boldenone, nandrolone, stanozolol, and testosterone within an undetermined number of days of a race, but would prohibit administration of all other anabolic steroids.

Florida considers new sale rules

N.J., TVG agree to new deal

The New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority has signed a contract with Television Games Network that assigns the television rights of Monmouth Park and the Meadowlands to TVG but allows the NJSEA to sell wagering rights to other companies, an authority official said Wednesday.
