ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The Ontario Horse Racing Industry Association is battling on after Ontario’s government instructed the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation to wind up the province’s racetrack slots program by March 31, 2013.

The measure was one of several issued by the province’s ruling Liberal party after it received an Ontario Lottery and Gaming report on Monday proposing “modernization” of the province’s gambling industry. The Ontario government is facing a $16 billion deficit. It will release its annual budget within the next couple of weeks.

Churchill Downs Inc. posted record revenue and earnings per share during 2011 due to strong growth in its casino and online wagering businesses, according to financial statements released late on Monday.

John Veitch, the former chief state steward for the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission, filed a lawsuit in Franklin Circuit Court on Friday disputing his firing last year and a one-year suspension approved by the commission in mid-February.

The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation, which owns and operates the slot machines at Ontario racetracks, has recommended in a report that all of the racing subsidies from the machines be re-directed to the provincial government as of March 13, 2013, the Ontario government said on Monday.

Trainer Tom Amoss, who is facing a 60-day suspension in Indiana for multiple medication positives over the past 12 months, was fined $500 by stewards at Fair Grounds late in February after a horse he trained tested positive for the painkiller naproxen.

The horse, Populist Politics, tested positive for the Class 4 non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication after finishing second in the $150,000 Louisiana Champions Day Classic Stakes on Dec. 10. The horse was not disqualified, and the purse was not redistributed, according to Fair Grounds chief steward Roy Wood.

The Jockey Club plans to launch a website on Sunday that will serve as a promotional tool for racing and eventually incorporate fan-oriented information from a site operated by the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, officials for the organizations said on Thursday.

The Indiana Horse Racing Commission has recommended that trainer Tom Amoss be suspended for 60 days and fined $5,000 after a horse he trained tested positive for methocarbomol after running in a race at Hoosier Park on Oct. 21, the third time that one of the trainer’s horses tested positive for the drug in a span of 15 days last fall.

Wagering on horse races at U.S. tracks in February jumped 7.6 percent compared to February of last year, according to figures released Monday by Equibase, the second time in three months that wagering has risen.

Fifteen racetracks have agreed to allow the Jockey Club to publish data about catastrophic injuries suffered by horses at their tracks, the Jockey Club announced Monday.

The data will be made available at a website created and maintained by the Jockey Club. The racetracks that have agreed to allow their data to be made public are Aqueduct, Belmont, Del Mar, Golden Gate, Gulfstream Park, Keeneland, Laurel Park, Lone Star Park, Pimlico, Portland Meadows, Remington Park, Santa Anita, Saratoga, Turfway Park, and Woodbine, the Jockey Club said.

Santa Anita will restore the signal from Oaklawn Park in Arkansas this week after officials of the two tracks and regulators in both states found no intentional manipulation of the betting pools following the cancellation of a $100,000 show bet on the first division of the Feb. 20 Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn.
