Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation asks court to dismiss New York lawsuit

The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation’s directors responded Monday to the New York attorney general’s lawsuit against them with a court filing that calls for the suit’s dismissal.

New York attorney general Eric Schneiderman filed suit May 3 in the New York State Supreme Court to remove the TRF board, alleging the group had “ruined” the finances of the nation’s largest charity for ex-racehorses and endangered horses in its care by allowing them to become neglected. The TRF is headquartered in Saratoga Springs, N.Y.

The New York Racing Association board of directors on Monday appointed its chief operating officer, Ellen McClain, as president of the association, and hired Kenneth Handal, a former assistant U.S. attorney, to be general counsel.

Jockey Club launches website for owners

The Jockey Club on Friday launched a website designed to provide information to owners of racehorses, part of a multi-pronged strategy to implement the recommendations of a study the Jockey Club commissioned last year.

The site, ownerview.com, includes trainer profiles and statistics as well as information on common issues facing owners, including licensing requirements. The site also includes a section in which currently licensed trainers can create their own profiles for viewing by users.

Pennsylvania Senate-passed budget doesn't include large-scale cuts to racing subsidies

The Pennsylvania Senate on Thursday passed a $27.7 billion budget that does not contain large-scale cuts to the amount of subsidies directed to the state’s horse racing industry as proposed by Gov. Tom Corbett.

Corbett, a Republican, had proposed directing $72 million a year over the next three years from racing’s subsidies from casino gambling to other state agricultural programs. The budget passed by the Republican-controlled Senate by a vote of 39-8 includes only a $3 million cut to the subsidies.

Suffolk Downs: Competing group drops out of casino license chase

Backers of a casino project near Foxboro Stadium in the Boston area have abandoned their plans, handing the lead for the sole casino license for the area to a partnership that includes Suffolk Downs in East Boston.

Casino owner Steve Wynn and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft dropped their plans for the Foxboro casino after two anti-gambling representatives were overwhelmingly elected to the town council, signaling that the township had serious objections to the idea of a casino next door to the Patriots stadium.

Churchill Downs Inc. shows $1.35M net earnings on record revenue in first quarter

Churchill Downs Inc. had net earnings of $1.35 million in the first three months of 2012 on record first-quarter revenue of $138.2 million, according to financial statements released on Monday.

The first-quarter profit compares favorably to a $3.19 million loss in the first quarter of last year.

Churchill has typically lost money in the first quarter of the year because of a dearth of live race dates, but the company's entry into the account-wagering and casino markets has smoothed out those dips.

Elliston the new Breeders' Cup chief operating officer

Bob Elliston, the president of Turfway Park since 1999 and the executive chairman of the National Thoroughbred Racing Association’s board of directors, has been hired as the new chief operating officer of Breeders’ Cup Ltd., Breeders’ Cup said on Monday.

Elliston, 48, will fill a position that has been vacated since Matthew Lutz, the chief operating officer at Breeders’ Cup since 2007, left the organization near the end of 2011. Jim Gluckson, a spokesman for Breeders’ Cup, said the appointment was effective immediately.

David C. Parrish Jr., a highly decorated Army Air Force veteran and former president of the prominent Indian Creek breeding operation in Paris, Ky., died May 2 in Paris of complications from Parkinson’s disease. He was 90.
