Hazel Park adds six days to Thoroughbred meet

Hazel Park Raceway will add six days to its 2014 live Thoroughbred meet, as approved Thursday by the Michigan Gaming Control Board.

The additional dates will extend the Detroit-area track’s season through Nov. 1, continuing Hazel Park’s normal schedule of racing Friday and Saturday nights. Hazel Park originally was slated to conclude its meet Saturday.

Casner sends out two runners to victory without Lasix

LEXINGTON, Ky. – For those interested in how the controversy over the race-day use of the anti-bleeding medication furosemide is playing out on the racetrack, last Wednesday’s card at Keeneland is an interesting case study.

Four races on the nine-race card were won by horses who ran without furosemide, the legal diuretic commonly known as Lasix. Only nine horses of the 73 horses on the card did not receive the drug, and four of them competed in the same 2-year-old maiden race.

September handle plunges 10 percent

Overall handle in September was down more than 10 percent nationwide, contributing to a decline in third-quarter business numbers compared to the same period in 2013, according to figures released on Saturday by Equibase.

Wagering in September in the United States totaled $693,548,821, a sharp decline of 10.55 percent from last year’s $775,340,152.

Trainer Mark Casse remembers exactly the day he met Ernie Semersky. It was July 8, 2012, and Casse was at Churchill Downs. Donnie Richardson, then a Churchill racing executive as well as Casse’s friend, paved the way for the introduction.

“Donnie told me he had a guy who was maybe interested in buying a horse,” Casse said.

Yes – Ernie Semersky was interested in buying a horse. In fact, he has been interested in buying lots of them.

Churchill, Kentucky Downs at odds over September dates

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky’s September race dates have once again emerged as a major source of contention.

This time, the dispute is pitting Churchill Downs, which ran its first September meet last year after wresting them from Turfway Park in 2012, against Kentucky Downs, the all-turf track near the border of Tennessee that has drawn praise over the past several years from horseplayers for its full fields and low takeout rates.

Industry report: U.S. casinos generate $38B in tax revenue
