Breeders' Cup Saturday viewership up 20 percent

Average viewership for NBC Sports Network’s broadcast of the Breeders’ Cup on Saturday afternoon and early evening was 376,000, according to the network, which said the figure represented a 20 percent gain over the average viewership for the same broadcast last year.

Nelson Bunker Hunt left indelible mark

Churchill Downs Inc. quarterly revenue, income fall

Churchill Downs Inc. had net income of $3.5 million in the third quarter of 2014, a sharp decline from net income of $9.2 million in the third quarter of last year, as revenue from its racetracks and many of its casinos continued to weaken, according to financial documents released by the company on Wednesday.

Jensen brings horse-racing industry experience to congressional run

Elisabeth Jensen wants to represent the state of Kentucky in Congress. In that respect, she is not like most people. Running for public office is not in the DNA of the average citizen.

But she is like tens of thousands of people in that she works in Thoroughbred racing, loves the sport, and wants to do more for it. She knows the daily struggles of those employed in racing, the challenges of owning and breeding racehorses, and the importance of racing and its agricultural infrastructure to the economy of Kentucky, as well as to the nation.

Judge halts Monmouth's plan to start taking sports bets

A federal judge has once again stepped between New Jersey and its plan to let state racetracks and casinos offer sports betting.

Judge Michael Shipp of the U.S. District Court in Trenton on Friday granted a request for injunction filed by major sports leagues that will prevent any New Jersey entity from offering sports betting until the leagues’ challenge of a recent law is heard. Shipp was one of two federal judges who had earlier struck down the state’s plan to offer betting last year, calling it a violation of federal law.

Michigan horseman Uelmen dies at 66

Larry Uelmen, a Michigan-based trainer, breeder, and jockey’s agent, died Oct. 19. He was 66.

Uelmen, a native of Wisconsin and resident of White Lake, Mich., saddled 1,190 winners from 1976 to his retirement in 2012, with his charges earning a combined $9,677,103 during that time span.

Penn National Gaming posts lower third-quarter revenue

Penn National Gaming Inc., the large racetrack and casino operator, had net income of $8.5 million in the third quarter of 2014 on net revenue of $645.9 million, according to financial statements released Thursday.
