Turf writer Dan Farley dies at age 72

Dan Farley, an award-winning turf writer and former president of the National Turf Writers Association, died Friday at a Mechanicsville, Va., hospital. He was 72.

Farley started his career with The Blood-Horse in 1971 and then served as a writer, managing editor, and editor of The Thoroughbred Record. He covered American racing for Pacemaker International for three years in the early 1980s and then worked for the International Racing Bureau.

Penn National issues Vazquez second ejection notice

Penn National Race Course in Grantville, Pa., has issued a second ejection notice to Juan Vazquez, claiming that the trainer violated a state racing rule by “attempting to gain favorable treatment through payment of a gratuity to a racing official,” according to a Penn National official and Vazquez’s attorney.

Logan Bailey, longtime DRF bureau chief and writer, dies at 75

Former Daily Racing Form Kentucky Bureau chief Logan Bailey, an award-winning journalist, died Tuesday in Lexington, Ky., after a very brief illness. He was 75.

Bailey worked for Daily Racing Form for 46 years and was still working part-time until his death due to congestive heart failure.

Ludt replaced by supervisor at Santa Anita

Tom Ludt, the senior vice president of racing operations at Santa Anita Park, has been replaced in his role by Keith Brackpool, his immediate supervisor, according to a late Thursday announcement by the company that owns the track, The Stronach Group.

Chamblin promoted to NTRA's chief operating officer

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Keith Chamblin, the senior vice president of marketing and industry relations for the National Thoroughbred Racing Association, has been named the association’s chief operating officer, the NTRA announced on Thursday.

Chamblin, who has been most closely identified with the NTRA’s organization of the National Handicapping Championship and the tournaments leading up to it, will “now work with every department to improve operational and financial performance” while continuing to oversee the projects in his previous role, the NTRA said in a release.

Committee endorses threshold limits for cobalt

A committee of the Association of Racing Commissioners International has approved a recommendation that state regulators treat any finding of cobalt in a post-race blood sample above the level of 50 parts per billion as a violation of racing rules, according to attendees of the committee meeting.

Penn National Gaming's net income rises during first quarter

Penn National Gaming Inc., the large casino and racetrack company, had net income of $11 million on revenue of $664.1 million during the first quarter of 2015, according to financial statements released by the company on Thursday.

The net income figure was more than double the net income figure of $4.5 million during last year’s first quarter, though both figures were a small fraction of the company’s revenue numbers for the quarter, representing a margin of 1.6 percent in this year’s first quarter and a margin of 0.7 percent last year.

Charity gives diabetic NYRA backstretch workers new shoes

Through an initiative begun by the Backstretch Employees Service Team and with contributions from owners, trainers, and other parties, backstretch workers with diabetes at the New York Racing Association tracks will be getting new work shoes free of charge.

B.E.S.T., a nonprofit devoted to improving the physical health and social well-being of barn-area workers at Aqueduct, Belmont, and Saratoga, treats more than 100 diabetics at its primary-care clinic, and many suffer from severe foot problems.
