Indiana governor vetoes internet betting bill

Indiana Gov. Mike Pence has vetoed legislation that would have legalized telephone and internet betting on horseracing in the state, citing his opposition to online gambling and an expansion of gambling.

Pence, a Republican, vetoed the legislation on Friday. Indiana remains one of the few major racing states that does not allow advance-deposit wagering, which is the only growing segment of the horserace betting market. Other notable racing states that do not allow online gambling on horseracing are Arizona and Texas, both also controlled by Republicans.

In a one-page ruling, stewards Scott Chaney, Luis Jauregui, and Tom Ward ruled that Flores “is permitted to hold a license in the category of jockey.” Jauregui is primarily a safety steward but participated in this decision because of the absence of steward Kim Sawyer during the hearing.
