1/ST consolidation plan would shuttle horses from Northern California to the South

Aidan Butler, president of 1/ST Racing, proposed the consolidation of racing in California at a California Horse Racing Board meeting Thursday.

In a continuing effort to consolidate daytime Thoroughbred racing in California to the state’s Southern circuit, a senior executive with the parent company of Santa Anita told the California Horse Racing Board on Thursday that the track is exploring ways to offer racing opportunities for Northern California-based horses in coming months while financially supporting training in that part of the state.

Roberts Communications Network to livestream Global Symposium on Racing

Roberts Communications Network, the racing video and data distribution company, will offer a livestream of the panels at the University of Arizona Global Symposium on Racing this year, with proceeds from the feed going to the university’s Race Track Industry Program, the company announced on Thursday.

This will be the fourth consecutive year that RCN has offered the livestream, which will be available on nearly all digital streaming devices, including Roku and Amazon Fire TV. The package will cost $149, RCN said.

Steven Wells certified as BCBC winner

Steven Wells, of North Dakota, was officially named the winner of the Breeders' Cup Betting Challenge with a bankroll of $158,000.

Steven Wells, a 51-year-old bar owner from North Dakota and veteran tournament horseplayer, has been certified as the winner of the Breeders’ Cup Betting Challenge, the largest live-money handicapping tournament in the U.S., Breeders’ Cup announced on Wednesday.

Wells, who has played in the BCBC since 2014, built up a winning bankroll of $158,000, with a large portion of the amount due to a $20,000 win bet on More Than Looks in the Breeders’ Cup Mile. More Than Looks paid $15.80.

Pleasanton cancels Friday card due to severe rain

Racing has been canceled at Pleasanton, Calif., on Friday because of a forecast of inclement weather, according to Tom Doutrich, the track’s racing secretary.

The track had scheduled a seven-race program. Racing is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday this weekend, Doutrich said.

Rain is expected in Pleasanton from Wednesday through Sunday, with a forecast of a third of an inch of rain on Wednesday, a fifth of an inch on Thursday and approximately 1.1 inches on Friday, according to accuweather.com.

HISA funds two research projects on sudden death in racehorses

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority has designated funding toward two research projects that are looking to establish indicators for risk of sudden death in racehorses, HISA announced on Tuesday.

One of the studies, which is being conducted by Dr. Sian Durward-Akhurst at the University of Minnesota, is analyzing the genomes and other biological markers in horses to identify common risks for sudden death. The study is hoping to produce non-invasive screening tests to determine at-risk horses for closer monitoring.

Janney to step down as chair of The Jockey Club; Dobson takes helm in August

Stuart S. Janney III, the co-breeder and co-owner of 2013 Kentucky Derby winner Orb, has been chairman of The Jockey Club since 2015.

Stuart S. Janney III, the chairman of The Jockey Club since 2015, will retire from the position in August of next year and be succeeded by Everett Dobson, the organization announced on Tuesday.

Janney, who took over the chairmanship upon the retirement of his cousin, Ogden Mills “Dinny” Phipps, occupied the top position at the Jockey Club at a time when the organization aggressively lobbied for the legislation that would eventually create the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority, despite deep pockets of resistance among many rank-and-file horsemen.

HISA appoints three to ADMC committee

The Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority has appointed three new members to its Anti-Doping and Medication Control Standing Committee to replace members whose terms are expiring, the authority announced Monday.

The three new members are David Ingordo, a bloodstock agent; David Sykes, a veterinarian based in Australia who has held numerous positions dealing with doping on the racetrack; and Jonathan Coyles, vice president of Drug, Health, and Safety Programs for Major League Baseball.
