Churchill Downs Inc. net income rises in third quarter

Churchill Downs Inc. had net income of $4.2 million in the third quarter, up $700,000, or 19 percent, over the same quarter last year, even as revenue for the company in the quarter jumped 61 percent to a record $279.8 million, according to financial documents released Wednesday.

Pennsylvania Racing Commission threatened by shutdown

Pennsylvania racing interests and state lawmakers are engaged in discussions over how to fund regulation of the horse racing industry in the wake of threats from the governor that he would issue an order to shut down the state racing commission as early as next week.

Aqueduct will have four-day race week during winter

NEW YORK - The New York Racing Association plans to reduce its live winter racing schedule at Aqueduct by about 12 days in 2016, going to a four-day race week from January through March, according to Chris Kay, NYRA’s chief executive officer and president.

The reduced schedule - Thursday through Sunday starting Jan. 7- has been approved by the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association and the New York Thoroughbred Breeders, but must be approved by the New York State Gaming Commission before being implemented.

Innovator's Circle deadline set for Nov. 2

Entries for the Innovator’s Circle, a contest being held in conjunction with the University of Arizona Global Symposium on Racing and Gaming, are due by Nov. 2, the contest organizers announced this week.

All materials related to the entry must be submitted to the contest organizers by Nov. 2 in order to qualify to be a contest finalist. The finalists will be announced the week after the deadline. All entries that are deemed finalists will be presented to a panel of judges during the symposium, scheduled for Dec. 7-9 in Tucson, Ariz.

Kentucky commission investigating "object" found in barn

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission has asked the public for information about an “an object” that was found in a blood-sampling barn at Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington, but commission officials would not comment on what they believe the object is.

California horsemen warned to avoid feed supplement with high cobalt concentration

ARCADIA, Calif. - The California Horse Racing Board issued a statement Friday, warning horsemen that a readily available feed supplement – Finish Line Iron Power – has a concentration of cobalt close to the permitted level allowed in post-race tests.

According to the statement, Finish Line Iron Power has a cobalt concentration of 21.6 milligrams per serving. Cobalt is allowed to appear in post-race tests up to 25 nanograms per milliliter of blood, a rule that went into effect on Oct. 5.

Oklahoma's 2016 racing calendar similar to 2015

The Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission on Thursday approved dates for 2016, according to Kelly Cathey, the agency’s interim executive director. The calendar is similar to the race dates in place for 2015. 

Remington Park in Oklahoma City was granted a 67-date meet for Thoroughbreds next year that mirrors the current season. The track will open Aug. 12 and race through Dec. 11.

Remington’s meet for Quarter Horses will run 50 dates next year, from March 11 to June 4.

Truesdail lab under scrutiny by RMTC

The Racing Medication and Testing Consortium has sent a report to Truesdail Laboratories outlining concerns arising from a recent site inspection but has not yet made a decision on whether the lab’s accreditation is in jeopardy, according to the head of the RMTC.

RMTC adds four drugs to regulated list

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Four therapeutic medications should be added to a list of medications that can be legally administered to racehorses, an influential horse-racing group, the Racing Medication and Testing Consortium, has recommended.
