Charles Town cancels Thursday night's card

Charles Town has canceled its Thursday night card as the West Virginia track continues to repair a hole on the outer part of its racing surface that was caused by a drainage-pipe leak under the grandstand apron.

The problem resulted in the cancellation of the final four races on last Saturday’s card. The Charles Town track has been closed for training ever since. The three-furlong training track remains open.

British Columbia Derby has purse reduced while six stakes get purse increases

VANCOUVER, British Columbia – The Grade 3, $150,000 British Columbia Derby on Sept. 10 is the highlight of the 2016 Hastings meet. The 53-day meet begins April 17 with the $35,000 Sir Winston Churchill for 3-year-olds and up and the $35,000 Brighouse Belles for fillies and mares. There are 40 stakes totaling $2.57 million scheduled for the meet, which concludes Oct. 16.

Local residents protest proposed casino at Belmont Park

FLORAL PARK, N.Y. – The communities surrounding Belmont Park are prepared to go to court to fight a proposed video lottery terminal casino at the track.

Thomas Tweedy, the mayor of Floral Park, said he is simply waiting for Nassau County Off-Track Betting to submit final plans for a 1,000-VLT parlor at Belmont Park before filing a lawsuit in an attempt to block it. Tweedy said current law prevents VLTs at Belmont Park, “so what we’re doing is saying, ‘Follow the law,’ ” he said. “We’re ready and willing to take this as far as it needs to go.”

Rams football team to get new stadium at old Hollywood Park site

The NFL is returning to the Los Angeles area and has chosen the site of shuttered Hollywood Park to construct a stadium that could be home to two teams for the 2019 season.

On Tuesday, the league announced that the St. Louis Rams are returning to the Los Angeles area after a 20-year absence. League owners voted 30-2 to approve the move.

The Rams, previously based in Anaheim, Calif., are owned by Stan Kroenke, part of the family that controls Wal-Mart. Kroenke purchased part of the Hollywood Park property in January 2014, shortly after the racetrack closed on Dec. 22, 2013.

Maryland Jockey Club requiring joint injections to claimed horses to be disclosed

Trainers of claimed horses will have to provide the new connections of the horse with information about any joint injections administered to the horse within the previous 30 days under a house rule adopted by the Maryland Jockey Club, the owner of Laurel Park and Pimlico Race Course.

Remington will offer record $5.7 million in stakes purses for Quarter Horses

Remington Park has released the stakes schedule for its Quarter Horse meet that opens March 11 and the 40-race calendar will be worth a track-record $5.7 million. The stakes program is led by the Grade 1, $1.1 million Heritage Place Futurity on the final card of the meet June 4.

The Heritage Place will anchor a program of eight stakes with the card expected to be worth more than $2 million. Other races making up the meet finale will include the Grade 1, $250,000 Remington Park Championship and the Grade 2, $370,000 Heritage Place Derby.

A small tornado tore the roofs from several stalls at Peter Miller's barn at San Luis Rey Downs. No injuries were reported.

A small tornado ripped the roof off several stalls at trainer Peter Miller’s barn at San Luis Rey Downs late Wednesday afternoon, the most significant damage from a series of storms that have pounded Southern California this week as the predicted El Niño weather pattern materializes.

Miller said that none of his horses nor employees were injured, but he believes the barn’s damage might be so extensive that it will have to be torn down.

“It’s miraculous that no person or horse was injured,” Miller said Thursday. “I’ve had to move the entire barn. The barn is compromised.”

Del Mar gets new track superintendent

ARCADIA, Calif. – Steven Wood has been named track superintendent at Del Mar, replacing Richard Tedesco, who will remain as a consultant, the track announced Wednesday.

Wood, 42, is the son of Steve Wood, who was the track superintendent at Del Mar from 1989 to 2009. Steven Wood has worked as foreman for Tedesco in recent years. Tedesco, 78, has directed the care of Del Mar’s main track for the last six years and has an extensive history of maintaining Southern California racetracks.
