Investors would share in revenue of $12 million race

The individuals who purchase a share in a $12 million race that was proposed by racetrack owner and owner-breeder Frank Stronach earlier this week would share in the revenues generated by the race but not in the revenues generated by any other races on the card, a senior official for Stronach’s racing company said on Thursday.

Mike Rogers, a senior vice president with the Stronach Group, said in an emailed response to questions about the race that many of the details in the proposal have yet to be nailed down.

Preciado begins suspension after appeal denied

The Delaware Racing Commission at its Wednesday meeting signed off on the appeal decision and penalty order for trainer Ramon Preciado, who had two clenbuterol positives at Delaware Park last summer. Preciado’s 21-day suspension began Thursday.

A blood sample taken from Trouble Kid, who is trained by Preciado, tested positive for clenbuterol after his nine-length win in a $25,000 starter allowance Aug. 26. Trouble Kid set a 5 1/2-furlong track record of 1:02.58 in that race. That record has been rescinded.

Racing board cancels monthly meeting

ARCADIA, Calif. – The California Horse Racing Board has canceled its monthly meeting at Santa Anita next Thursday because of a lack of need, according to Rick Baedeker, executive director of the racing board.

Beadeker said there was not a sufficient number of items scheduled for discussion to ask commissioners and racing executives from throughout the state to convene for the meeting. The next scheduled meeting will take place Feb. 25 at Santa Anita.

“We want the meetings to be meaningful for people,” Baedeker said.

American Pharoah's Triple Crown sweep was voted the top sports story of the year by the Associated Press.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – There will be a final celebration of the historic year of Triple Crown winner American Pharoah when the 45th annual Eclipse Awards are held Saturday night here at Gulfstream Park, where American Pharoah is a shoo-in to be named Horse of the Year and champion 3-year-old male.

Much of the interest, though, will focus on how extensive the coattails are for American Pharoah because his trainer, jockey, and owner and breeder all are up for awards in their respective divisions.

OwnerView speakers focus on thrills racehorses provide

HALLANDALE, Fla. – Owners descended on Gulfstream Park for the second OwnerView Conference to learn about racehorse ownership, and on the second day of the two-day affair on Wednesday they heard a lot about the great upside, and sometimes tragic downside, of racing, and this may have whetted many of their appetites to achieve those same heights in the sport. That’s because the current and prospective owners had a chance to hear from sports radio host and racehorse owner Jim Rome as well as Triple Crown-winning owner-breeder Ahmed Zayat.

International Star looks to rebound in Louisiana Stakes

Barbara D. Livingston
International Star, winner of last year's Louisiana Derby, will make his second start following a long layoff in Saturday's Louisiana Stakes.

International Star won all three Kentucky Derby prep races last winter and spring at Fair Grounds, sweeping the Lecomte, Risen Star, and Louisiana Derby, but he was injured and scratched from the Kentucky Derby the morning of the race. None of the Fair Grounds 3-year-old dirt-route stakes last year appeared to be top quality, and International Star’s comeback race following a long layoff did little to suggest he’s a top-class colt.
