Eclipse Awards: California runners poised for a festive evening

After a one-year absence from the podium, Southern California-based horses could win anywhere from three to five Eclipse Awards on Thursday when Thoroughbred racing’s champions for 2024 are announced at a black-tie ceremony held at the Breakers Palm Beach, a resort in South Florida.

HISA reinstates Lopez from indefinite suspension

Jockey Paco Lopez has been reinstated by HISA and will be allowed to return to racing on Jan. 23.

Veteran jockey Paco Lopez, who was issued an indefinite suspension in early December by the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority for striking a horse after a race, will be allowed to return to riding as of Jan. 23, HISA said on Saturday morning.

A representative of the parent company of Gulfstream Park in Florida told the track’s horsemen on Wednesday that live racing would continue at the track for the next three years provided the horsemen supported the company’s effort to pass legislation allowing it to continue to operate a casino at the property without a statutory live-racing requirement, according to multiple trainers who attended the closed-door meeting.

Chris Merz, the former director of racing operations at Canterbury Park in Minnesota and a former racing secretary at Santa Anita Park, has been hired as the executive director of the Maryland Racing Commission, the state’s Department of Labor announced on Wednesday.

The Jockey Club announces new steward through BHA exchange program

Through an international exchange program, Cody Watkins, a steward of the British Horseracing Authority, has been appointed The Jockey Club steward at the New York Racing Association tracks, it was announced Wednesday in a press release.

An exact start date for Watkins was not mentioned, just that he would begin in early January.

Advance-deposit wagering shut down in Michigan

Advanced-deposit wagering has ceased in the state of Michigan after the state’s gambling commission allowed its approval of third-party operators to lapse due to the closure of the state’s last remaining track.

The Michigan Gaming Control Board ruled that ADW operations could not go on under state law as of Jan. 1 without a live operating track tied to the third-party operators. In late February of last year, Northville Downs, a harness track, closed its doors.

Gulfstream's parent company says it needs the decoupling bill in place to secure financing for improvements to the racetrack.

An agreement between the owner of Gulfstream Park and Florida’s horsemen to jointly support legislation that would allow Gulfstream to continue to operate its casino without any obligations to live racing will allow the track to obtain financing for improvements to the Gulfstream property, according to a top official at the company.

Turfway further adjusts schedule; Thursday card canceled due to winter storm

Due to a winter storm, Turfway has made adjustments to this week's racing schedule, with Thursday's card being canceled.

With Kentucky in the grips of a major winter storm, followed by days of frigid temperatures, Turfway Park has again modified its schedule, cancelling Thursday evening's scheduled card. 

The $180,036 carryover into the late Pick 5 that was scheduled for Thursday will now shift to Friday's card, the track said in announcing the cancellation on Monday afternoon.

Handy Dandy disqualified after medication positive

ARCADIA, Calif. – Handy Dandy has been disqualified from a win and placed last in a $42,000 race at Del Mar in August after a positive medication test, according to a ruling published on Saturday by Santa Anita stewards.

Handy Dandy tested positive for tranexamic acid, a medication used to treat bleeding disorders in horses, according to published studies.

Handy Dandy won a conditional $32,000 claimer at 1 1/8 miles on turf on Aug. 25 as the 9-2 second choice in a field of 10. Handy Dandy earned $24,000, which has been ordered to be forfeited, according to the ruling.
