Humboldt county fair officials to request racing dates at Ferndale

The Humboldt county fair board of directors voted on Monday to proceed with a license application for a late summer race meeting at its venue in Ferndale, Calif.

Humboldt may be the lone fair meeting to operate in California this year.

All sources wagering in California declined in 2024 compared to the previous year.

All-sources handle at all racing venues in California declined 7 percent in 2024 compared to the previous year, according to statistics presented at Thursday’s California Horse Racing Board meeting.

Business at Northern and Southern California Thoroughbred tracks, the harness meeting in Sacramento, and the yearlong mixed meeting of Quarter Horses and lower-level Thoroughbreds at Los Alamitos reached $2.82 billion last year, down from $3.02 billion in 2023.

Maryland Jockey Club hires Thistledown's Banno as director of racing surfaces

John Banno, the track superintendent at Thistledown in Northeast Ohio for the past 22 years, has been hired by the Maryland Jockey Club as its director of racing surfaces, the government-owned MJC said on Friday.

Banno, who began working in track maintenance more than 30 years ago, will be responsible for oversight of the racing and training surfaces at Laurel Park, Pimlico Race Course, and a new training center planned for the Shamrock Farm property, the MJC said.

A Michigan District Court judge in a ruling on Wednesday granted Churchill Downs a preliminary injunction that will allow TwinSpires.com to operate in the state, in a case that is being closely watched by the racing industry.

Judge Hala Jarbou of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Michigan ruled that Churchill Downs had “demonstrated a likelihood of success on the merits” of its case, which argues that the Michigan Gaming Control Board does not have the authority to prohibit account wagering on horse racing in the state when the race occurs outside of Michigan.

Overall fatality rate down 27 percent at HISA tracks in 2024

HISA has reported that the overall fatality rate at its track has decline by 27 percent compared to 2023.

The overall fatality rate for horses running at tracks under the jurisdiction of the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority in 2024 was 0.90 per 1,000 starts, HISA said on Thursday, a 27 percent decline compared to the rate in 2023 at HISA tracks.
