Michigan Horse Racing Advisory Commission members appointed

The initial members of the Michigan Horse Racing Advisory Commission have been announced. They were appointed by Gov. Rick Snyder to counsel the state government on racing industry matters.

The seven-person board was created for the Michigan Gaming Control Board to govern the operation and promotion of the state’s industry, and make recommendations to the state legislature. Members will serve four-year terms, expiring Oct. 31, 2020.

Handle at fall meet declines slightly

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – All-sources handle at the Churchill Downs fall meet that ended Sunday was down slightly from the corresponding meet in 2015, according to figures released Monday by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission.

Gross handle this fall was $100,750,712, down nearly 4 percent from the 2015 fall meet, where $104.6 million was wagered. Both meets encompassed 21 days. Per-day wagering at the 2016 meet averaged nearly $4.8 million.

Handle dips at Belmont Park fall meet

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – All-sources handle was down 7.3 percent and ontrack handle was down 6 percent at the Belmont Park fall meet, according to figures provided by the New York Racing Association.

All-sources handle for the 38-day meet that ran Sept. 11 through Oct. 30 was $297,759,466, down from the 2015 fall-meet total of $321,050,623. Ontrack handle was $37,566,563, down from $39,989,451. The all-sources total includes about $5.2 million of international handle on Belmont’s races, up about $200,000 from last fall.

Four finalists chosen for Vox Populi Award

Online voting is now open for the seventh annual Secretariat Vox Populi Award. Created by Secretariat's owner, Penny Chenery, the Vox Populi  (“Voice of the People”) Award recognizes the racehorse whose popularity and racing excellence best resounded with the public and gained recognition for the sport during the past year. 

Four nominees were selected by the Vox Populi Committee, and voters again have the option to write-in a racehorse of their choice.           

This year’s nominees are: Beholder, California Chrome, Songbird, and Tepin.

Northern California dates set

The California Horse Racing Board has set the 2017 racing dates for Northern California and will finalize them at the December meeting after hearing whether the Sonoma County Fair at Santa Rosa decides to run two weeks or three.

Golden Gate Fields will run from Dec. 21, 2016 through June 20, 2017.  It will hold a short summer meeting from Aug. 23-Sept. 19 and a fall meet from Oct. 18-Dec. 19.

Quarantine lifted at Gulfstream Park

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – Gulfstream Park officials announced late Monday that the Florida Department of Agriculture has lifted the quarantine on Barn 5, which had been implemented two weeks earlier after a horse in that barn died and subsequently tested positive for equine herpesvirus.

Track officials said that blood tests taken Sunday on the approximately two dozen horses housed in the barn all returned negative for equine herpesvirus. The barn has been occupied by several trainers who’ve been stabled at the track since the end of the 2016 championship meet.

Kentucky requires ADWs to post bonds

The Kentucky Horse Racing Commission on Tuesday approved new rules that will require account-wagering companies to post bonds as a condition of licensing beginning in 2017.

The rules, which passed unanimously, will require small account-wagering companies to post a $100,000 bond. Larger account-wagering companies will be required to post a $500,000 bond. The bond requirements will be set by a formula based on the the companies’ average weekly and daily handles.

Art Sherman wins Big Sport of Turfdom Award

Art Sherman, the trainer of 2016 Horse of the Year candidate California Chrome, has been named the winner of the 2016 Big Sport of Turfdom, which is awarded by the Turf Publicists of America annually to honor a “person or group of people who enhance coverage of Thoroughbred racing through cooperation with media and racing publicists.”

Study shows Maryland horse industry surging

A new economic impact study paid for by members of the Maryland equine industry claims that the state horse industry generated $1.15 billion in economic activity in 2015, up 23 percent when compared to economic activity in 2010.
