Parx refusing entries from Ramon Preciado

With trainer Ramon Preciado’s license set to be revoked Thursday, Parx Racing officials said they would no longer accept entries from him beginning Monday, when the track’s Dec. 26 card was to be drawn.

A Parx steward’s ruling dated Dec. 12 revoked Preciado’s trainer’s license for a clenbuterol violation in July. The July positive is one of a long list of infractions Preciado has had the past two years.

Los Alamitos ends strong December meeting on high note

CYPRESS, Calif. – Los Alamitos ended a two-week winter Thoroughbred meeting on Sunday with an increase in average daily all-sources handle of approximately 16 percent from last year’s December meeting, according to general manager Brad McKinzie.

The meeting, which began Dec. 8, had a slight increase in average ontrack handle, McKinzie said. The track did not release detailed business figures for the meet, which ran for eight days compared to 12 last year.

Remington all-sources handle declines 8 percent

Remington Park in Oklahoma City achieved its highest handle day since 1999 during the 67-date meet that closed last Sunday, but it was not enough to keep the track from experiencing a decline in handle for the first time since 2012.

No indications of foul play in Garrett Gomez's death

Foul play is not suspected in the death of ex-jockey Garrett Gomez at a Tucson-area casino and hotel on Wednesday, the attorney general of the tribe that runs the casino said on Friday.

Alfred Urbina, the top law official of the Pascua Yaqui tribe, confirmed that he told the Associated Press that Gomez, 44, was found unconscious on the floor of a hotel room at the tribe’s Casino Del Sol Resort and Casino and was pronounced dead at the scene. Toxicology tests are expected to be completed in the next several weeks, and an official cause of death has yet to be determined.

Canterbury Park gets approval for 67-day meet in 2017

The Minnesota Racing Commission on Thursday approved Canterbury Park’s request for a 67-day race meeting during 2017.

The Twin Cities-area track’s meet will start May 5 and end Sept. 12. This year’s 69-day meet was conducted between May 20 and Sept. 17.

Canterbury lowered its takeout rate during 2016 in an effort to boost simulcast market share, dropping blended takeout from 20.4 percent to 16.5 percent, the lowest rate in the United States. Gross and net handle for the season did rise but at a rate three or four times lower than what track officials had hoped.

Santa Anita, two wagering companies reach handle agreement

Santa Anita has reached an agreement with TVG and Xpressbet that requires the account-wagering companies to pay a greater share of their handle toward purses and to the track on account wagers placed on mobile devices at the track.

The agreement starts opening day of the winter-spring meeting, Dec. 26, officials said.

The agreement, reached in recent days, was discussed at Thursday’s California Horse Racing Board meeting. Santa Anita and Xpressbet are owned by The Stronach Group.

Turf Paradise suspends Quarter Horse jockey for carrying buzzer

Stewards at Turf Paradise have suspended jockey Martin Osuna for six months and recommended that the rider be suspended an additional five years after determining that he used an electrical device during a stakes race for Quarter Horses on Sunday at the Phoenix track.

Osuna was given the suspension following a hearing on Wednesday, four days after the Mike Hastings Memorial, a $12,000 race for Quarter Horses. Osuna rode the winner, Captain On Takeoff, the 7-2 second choice in the nine-horse field, for trainer Charles Acosta.

Oaklawn to have enhanced drug-testing program at upcoming meet

Super tests will be standard fare during the upcoming meet at Oaklawn Park in Hot Springs, Ark.

The Arkansas Racing Commission on Wednesday announced an increase to its drug-testing budget for the 2017 meet at Oaklawn. The added funds will provide for “super tests” on every race run at the track rather than just its graded stakes races.

Parx: Winter dates approved

The Pennsylvania Racing Commission has approved a three-day-a-week winter racing season at Parx. The Bensalem track had been scheduled to close Jan. 10 and reopen March 4.

According to Sam Elliott, the track’s director of racing, the results of this year’s fall festival played a role in the change of plans.
