Troubled trainer Preciado prepared to quit racing

Ramon Preciado, the Pennsylvania-based trainer whose license was revoked in the state on Dec. 21 on two separate rulings, is unlikely to continue fighting the penalties and is preparing to leave horse racing altogether, his attorney said on Thursday.

Alan Pincus, the attorney, said Preciado has not yet made a final decision, but he also said that Preciado’s legal troubles have escalated to the point where the trainer does not see a way forward. In addition to the license revocations, Parx Racing, where Preciado is based, has refused to take entries from the trainer.

Heritage Place Futurity tops Remington stakes schedule for Quarter Horses

The Grade 1, $1 million Heritage Place Futurity on June 3 will lead a $5.6 million stakes schedule during Remington Park’s meet for Quarter Horses. The season opens March 10. The Heritage Place will highlight a closing-day card of eight stakes, with the total value of those races more than $2 million.

Other highlights of the season include the Grade 3, $400,000 Oklahoma Futurity on March 25 and the Grade 2, $950,000 Remington Park Futurity on Aprl 22.

Sam Houston hires Crawford as new racing secretary

Matt Crawford has been named the new racing secretary at Sam Houston, the track announced. The Thoroughbred meet opens Jan. 20. Crawford comes to Sam Houston after serving in the same capacity at Delta Downs in Vinton, La.

Delta, which is in the midst of a Thoroughbred meet, expects to name a new racing secretary in the next week, Chris Warren, the track’s director of racing, said Tuesday.

Positive herpes test prompts quarantine of Fair Grounds barn

One barn on the Fair Grounds backstretch is under quarantine after a horse stabled in it tested positive for equine herpesvirus.

The horse, an Alice Cohn-trained 2-year-old filly stabled in Barn 14, became symptomatic over the weekend and eventually had to be put down because of the severe neurological symptoms associated with the EHV-1 strain of the herpesvirus. The animal returned a positive herpesvirus test Monday, after which security protocols were put in place to restrict contact with horses stabled in the affected barn.

Veterinarian fined, suspended

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - The New York stewards suspended veterinarian Camilo Sierra for 30 days and fined him $1,500 for submitting health certificates for horses he failed to examine. The suspension, which was to take effect Tuesday, was reduced to 20 days for Sierra waiving his right of appeal.

Charles Town: Remainder of 2017 dates finalized

The West Virginia Racing Commission has approved the schedule at Charles Town for the second half of next year. The commission okayed racing dates for Charles Town through May at its November meeting.

Charles Town will hold 166 cards in 2017. The track will race Wednesdays through Saturdays from Jan. 11 through May 20 and then switch to a Thursday-through-Saturday format until Dec. 23.

Masochistic, Ellis could be denied participation in 2017 Breeders' Cup

Masochistic has won both of his starts this year, most recently in the Grade 2 Pat O'Brien in August.

The Breeders’ Cup in a press release on Tuesday said it was “extremely disappointing” to learn of the confirmatory post-race steroid test for Masochistic - which will disqualify him from a second-place finish in the BC Sprint at Santa Anita on Nov. 5 - and said it will wait until the California Horse Racing Board’s investigation is completed before deciding on penalties going forward for Masochistic, trainer Ron Ellis, or any of his assistants.

Tara's Tango retired, will become Stonestreet broodmare

Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer said the Breeders’ Cup Distaff at Santa Anita on Nov. 4 is a goal he would like to pursue with Tara’s Tango.

Tara’s Tango, the California-based Grade 1 winner who was among the top fillies on the West Coast in 2016, has retired from racing and will become a broodmare at Stonestreet Farms.

Stonestreet owner Barbara Banke confirmed Monday that Tara’s Tango, a 4-year-old by Unbridled’s Song, was retired following her fourth-place finish Nov. 5 in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Santa Anita. Banke said Tara’s Tango will be bred in the spring to Medaglia d’Oro.

Owner Vincent Viola named secretary of Army

Vincent Viola, owner of St. Elias Stable with his wife, Teresa, was selected by president-elect Donald Trump to serve as secretary of the Army.

A native of Brooklyn, N.Y., Viola graduated from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point in 1977, served in the 101st Airborne Division, and continued his military involvement by establishing the Combating Terrorism Center at West Point in 2003. He is also owner of the National Hockey League’s Florida Panthers, which he bought in 2013, and chairman of Virtu Financial, an electronic trading business he founded in 2008.

Penn National jockey charged with attempted homicide

Penn National jockey Luis Belmonte has been charged with attempted homicide and is being held in the Dauphin County Prison in Pennsylvania on $1 million bail, according to WPMT FOX 43 news of Harrisburg.

Belmonte, who has ridden since 1994, is 0 for 27 this year. He began riding at Penn National in August after not having competed since last December. He has ridden 1,891 winners in his career. He won 26 races in 2015.
