Randy Rouse, oldest trainer to win in North America, dies at 100

Randy Rouse, who last year became the oldest trainer to win a Thoroughbred race in North America at age 99, died at 100 on Friday.

Rouse, a former president of the National Steeplechase Association, received the group’s highest honor, the F. Ambrose Clark Award, in January. The award is given to individuals who have promoted, improved, and encouraged the growth and welfare of steeplechase racing in the U.S.

Last April, Rouse broke his own record, set when he was 97 in 2014, when Hishi Soar won the $25,000 feature at the Foxfield spring races in Charlottesville, Va.

$3 million All American Futurity tops Ruidoso Downs stakes schedule

The Grade 1, $3 million All American Futurity, the richest race offered for Quarter Horses, leads the Ruidoso Downs stakes schedule. The 440-yard race for 2-year-olds will be run on the final card of the meet Sept. 4. Trials are Aug. 18-19.

Ruidoso, which puts on a mixed meet for Quarter Horses and Thoroughbreds, opens May 26.

Lifelong racetracker Frank Kurinec dies at 99

Frank Kurinec, who worked at the racetrack from the age of 14 into his early 90s, recently died, according to friends. He was 99.

Kurinec was a jockey turned trainer who lived out his final years in Hot Springs, Ark. His last job on the track was working as a gap attendant for clockers at Oaklawn.

Handle on U.S. races down 1.1 percent in first quarter

Wagering on U.S. Thoroughbred races declined slightly in the first quarter of 2017 despite an uptick in the number of races held and record-setting handle on the inaugural $12 million Pegasus World Cup in late January, according to figures distributed Wednesday by Equibase.

Wagering in the first three months fell 1.1 percent, from $2.50 billion in the first quarter of last year to $2.47 billion this year. Races were up 3.7 percent, in part because of milder weather this winter in the Midwest and on the East Coast.

Santa Anita: Roman, Almanza suspended for careless riding

ARCADIA, Calif. – Jockeys Evin Roman and Rito Almanza will serve suspensions beginning this weekend for careless-riding infractions in recent races at Santa Anita.

Roman, a 19-year-old apprentice, has been suspended six racing days – from Friday through April 16 – for causing interference aboard Eskenforandreya in the eighth race on March 31. Eskenforandreya finished second in a maiden claimer at a mile but bumped with eventual winner Agent Nine T Nine twice in the final furlong.

Santa Anita alters pick six rules when late surface switch occurs

ARCADIA, Calif.- Santa Anita recently received approval from the California Horse Racing Board to change the rules regarding pick six distributions in the event of a surface switch after the bet is underway.

The new rule takes effect on Thursday. In the event of a late surface switch, the 15 percent portion of the net pool typically dedicated to the single ticket jackpot provision of the pool will be redirected to the portion of the pool distributed to ticketholders with six winners, or into a carryover.
