Stronach Group mulling plans for Massachusetts racing

Tim Ritvo, chief operating officer of the Stronach Group, is looking at ways to improve business at Santa Anita.

The Stronach Group has asked the Massachusetts state legislature to give the state gambling commission more power to change simulcasting and account-wagering laws in order to pave the way for a proposed partnership on a Thoroughbred meet at the defunct Raynham greyhound track in 2018, an official of the company said on Tuesday.

Saratoga starts meet with strong business

The 2017 Saratoga meet has gotten out of the gates strong from a business standpoint, with all-sources handle up 6.6 percent for the first four days of the meet compared to last year.

All-sources handle was $78,132,020 for the first week of this meet compared to $73,303,141 in 2016, according to numbers provided by the New York Racing Association. Ontrack handle was $16,866,750, up 3.6percent from last year’s figure of $16,270,479.

Daily Racing Form sold to Z Capital Partners

The parent company of Daily Racing Form has been sold to Z Capital Partners, a private equity management company, the two parties announced on Tuesday.

The deal by Z Capital to purchase Sports Information Group, DRF’s parent, closed on Friday. Terms of the deal were not disclosed by the two sides.

Racing, track executives seek similar Southern California calendar in 2018

DEL MAR, Calif. – The 2018 Southern California racing calendar will be largely unchanged from this year if racing and track executives have their say, according to a 90-minute discussion of the California Horse Racing Board’s dates committee Friday at Del Mar.

The committee – racing board chairman Chuck Winner and vice chairman George Krikorian – did not take action on Thoroughbred racing dates on the Northern and Southern California circuits. The committee is expected to meet again in August. Racing dates for 2018 are likely to be finalized in early fall.

DEL MAR, Calif. –  The California Horse Racing Board will consider implementing a rule later this year prohibiting horses claimed at California tracks from leaving the state for a period of time, and a regulation to scratch a horse that is racing as a gelding for the first time if the information is not presented to the public before the start of betting.

The proposed rules were introduced at Thursday’s California Horse Racing Board meeting, but are months from being implemented.

Jules Watson, longtime DRF clocker, dies at 90

Jules Watson, who witnessed the morning developments of such greats as Secretariat and Spectacular Bid during a lifetime of clocking horses in New York and south Florida, died of natural causes Tuesday at his home in Hallandale Beach, Fla. He was 90.

Watson was a clocker for Daily Racing Form at the New York Racing Association tracks for more than 35 years before moving to Florida in the early 1990s. He commanded the highest respect from horsemen and colleagues during a racetrack career that spanned more than a half-century.

Despite smaller crowd, Del Mar officials content with safely run opener

DEL MAR, Calif. – A safely run racing day more than offset a downward spike in on-track attendance on opening day Wednesday for Joe Harper, Del Mar’s president and chief executive.

“It was a good day. Couldn’t be happier,” Harper said in the press box to a group of media members after the final race on Wednesday. “Everyone got around safely. That was number one.”

Stronach Group in talks to partner on Massachusetts race meet

The top racing official of The Stronach Group is scheduled to meet on Monday with the owner of two racetrack properties in the Boston area to discuss the possibility of partnering on a Thoroughbred meet at one of the tracks, the official said on Wednesday.
