Indiana Grand stewards suspend Didiel Osorio for alleged possession of electrical device

Stewards at Indiana Grand have suspended jockey Didiel Osorio indefinitely for the alleged possession of an electric device in the fifth race on Aug. 10 there.

Osorio rode Deep Explorer to victory in the $16,000 turf claiming race for trainer Donald Habeeb, who co-owns the horse with Michael J. Thomas and Jeff W. Allen. Deep Explorer took heavy betting just before the start of the race and won by two lengths as the 7-10 favorite.

Saratoga handle up through first 16 days of racing

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y - All-sources handle on the first 16 days of the 2017 Saratoga meet is up 5.6 percent while ontrack handle is up 2.3 percent compared to the same time period in 2016, according to figures provided by the New York Racing Association.

Through Monday, all-sources handle was $279,099,864, compared to $264,332,983 through the first 16 days of 2016. Ontrack handle was $63,463,693, compared with $62,040,659 a year ago.

Business declines at Sacramento meet

Despite an additional day of racing, ontrack wagering and all-sources live handle wagering for the 11-day 2017 California State Fair meet at Sacramento declined over the 10-day 2016 meet totals.

Ontrack wagering on live races fell 6 percent and all-sources handle, including out-of-state and account wagering, declined 16 percent.

Kentucky Downs may allow exchange wagering from New Jersey residents

New Mexico bans three Quarter Horse trainers suspended in Texas

New Mexico has barred three Quarter Horse trainers who were recently suspended by the Texas Racing Commission for Class 1 racing positives, including the trainer of an early favorite for the upcoming All American Futurity at Ruidoso Downs in the state.

Ismael Trejo, the executive director of the New Mexico Racing Commission, said he notified trainer Judd Kearl on Monday that the commission was honoring the Texas suspensions under the state’s reciprocity doctrine, which requires racing commissions to recognize rulings in other states.

Penn National Gaming revenue up 3.5 percent in second quarter

Penn National Gaming Inc., the owner of 29 racetracks and casinos across the U.S., had net income of $17.1 million in the second quarter of 2017, according to financial statements released Thursday, as interest payments on a large debt continued to take a chunk out of its bottom line.

Total revenue during the quarter was $796.5 million, up 3.5 percent from $769.4 million in the second quarter last year. Operating expenses were $661.4 million, up 6.7 percent, while interest expenses were an additional $116.8 million, according to the financial statements.

Penn National's ban of trainer Eduardo Rojas upheld by commission

The Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission has upheld a decision by Penn National Race Course in Grantville, Pa., to ban trainer Eduardo Rojas, who is married to a trainer who recently was convicted on 14 charges of misbranding drugs and conspiracy related to horses she trained.

Penn National issued the permanent ban in early July, several days after a jury returned a guilty verdict against Murray Rojas, Eduardo Rojas’s wife, on the misbranding and conspiracy charges. The charges were based on actions by Murray Rojas involving horses that raced at Penn National in 2013.
