Choice to develop property at Belmont Park to be revealed Wednesday

A press conference will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Belmont Park, at which time Gov. Andrew Cuomo will announce which of two bids has been selected to redevelop underutilized property at the track, a source familiar with the event told Daily Racing Form.

The press conference, first reported by Newsday, will be held in the Turf and Field Club at Belmont Park.

Stronach committee to review horses for remaining Pegasus slots

Breeders' Cup Classic winner Gun Runner is expected to be a heavy favorite in the Pegasus World Cup.

The Stronach Group will set up a committee to evaluate horses being considered for the three slots that the company bought for its own Pegasus World Cup, to be run on Jan. 27 at Gulfstream Park near Miami.

Baffert finishes meet as leading trainer

Trainer Bob Baffert comes into the Belmont Stakes with a fourth shot at sweeping the Triple Crown.

Bob Baffert led all trainers at the 11-day Los Alamitos winter meeting with six wins, two of which were in Grade 1 races.

On Dec. 9, Baffert became the first trainer to win the Grade 1 Starlet Stakes and Grade 1 Los Alamitos CashCall Futurity in the same year.

The Los Alamitos meet began Nov. 30 and ended Sunday.

Baffert won the Starlet with Dream Tree and the Los Alamitos Futurity with McKinzie, who was promoted from second to first after the Baffert-trained Solomini was disqualified and placed third for causing interference in the stretch.

Penn National to buy Pinnacle Entertainment

Ontario Racing, Standardbred Alliance merge

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – The board of Ontario Racing and members of the Standardbred Alliance have voted to merge the two organizations, creating an independent organization that will represent all Ontario racetracks and horse racing industry associations in the province with a unified voice, according to a press release put out by Ontario Racing on Thursday.

Bernard Daney, former chairman of the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission, dies at 92

Bernard Daney, an accomplished businessman, educator, and racing regulator who served as chairman of the Delaware Thoroughbred Racing Commission for 18 years, died Dec. 9 at age 92.

Daney, a Delaware native who resided in Greenville, earned a Bronze Star for serving with the infantry in France and Germany during World War II.

Lynn Chouinard of Bar None Ranches dies at 75

Lynn Chouinard, owner of Bar None Ranches in Dewinton, Alberta, Canada, died Dec. 7 after a 12-year battle with cancer. He was 75.

An investment advisor by trade, Chouinard founded Bar None Ranches in the early 1980s, and developed it into one of western Canada’s leading racing and breeding operations over the next three decades.

Bar None Ranches is a perennial top owner and breeder in Alberta, having bred or raced Grade 3 winner Code Name Fred, stakes winners Silver Baubles and Fuhr Ore, and stakes-placed Gone in a Flash.

Proposals unveiled for underused parcels at Belmont Park

The site plan submitted by the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League calls for an arena and retail space adjacent to Belmont Park.

ELMONT, N.Y. – For the first time publically, the two groups hoping to redevelop underutilized property at Belmont Park revealed their plans on Sunday.

One group, representing the New York Islanders of the National Hockey League, wants to build an 18,000-seat arena that would return the team to Long Island, where they played at the Nassau Coliseum from 1972 to 2015 before moving to Brooklyn. The plan includes 435,000 square feet of dining and retail space as well as a hotel and 10,000 square feet for community space.
