NTRA opens voting for 'Moment of the Year'

The National Thoroughbred Racing Association has opened voting for the organization’s “Moment of the Year,” a contest it launched in 1999 to commemorate the sport’s most distinctive events of the preceding year.

Frank Stronach honored with Eclipse Award of Merit

Frank Stronach, the Austrian emigrant who made a fortune in Canada in auto parts and who has operated at the top of the Thoroughbred racing and breeding industry in North America for more than two decades, has been named the latest recipient of the Eclipse Award of Merit, the administrators of the Eclipse Awards announced on Monday.

Handle, field sizes rise at Remington Park meet

Remington Park in Oklahoma City closed its 67-date Thoroughbred meet Dec. 17 and reported double-digit gains in handle over the corresponding season in 2016.

Remington handled an average of $997,675 a card on its races from all sources at this meet, up 16 percent over 2016. The biggest gain was realized offtrack. Remington handled an average of $943,108 per card at off-site locations, up 18 percent.

Purses for the meet averaged $240,969 per program, up 1.8 percent, while fields averaged 8.96 horses, up from 8.4.

Pennsylvania commission revokes license of Penn National trainer

The Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission has revoked the license of a Penn National-based trainer after an investigation by the regulatory body revealed that the trainer failed to properly care for horses in his barn, according to a ruling posted on the commission’s website.

Hall of Fame trainer Jack Van Berg dies at 81

Jack Van Berg, shown here in October, trained Kentucky Derby winner and Horse of the Year Alysheba.

Jack Van Berg, the Hall of Fame trainer who conditioned 1988 Horse of the Year Alysheba, died Wednesday morning in a Little Rock, Ark., hospital. He was 81.

Van Berg had been battling a number of health issues, including cancer in his jaw and congestive heart failure, according to his son, Tom Van Berg. He died at Baptist Health Center. His children had been with him in Arkansas.

“He made it till break time,” a somber Tom Van Berg said Wednesday. “He fought as hard as he could. His body just gave out.”

Standstill in negotiations between NYRA and Jockeys' Guild raises talk of work stoppage

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – Negotiations between the New York Racing Association and the Jockeys’ Guild over a contract regarding health benefits and insurance have stalled, creating the possibility of a work stoppage at Aqueduct beginning with the Jan. 6 card.

According to Tom Kennedy, an attorney for the Jockeys’ Guild, the Guild is seeking a three-year contract with NYRA that calls for no increase in benefit payments in 2018 and a 1 percent increases in 2019 and 2020. Kennedy said Thursday that NYRA has refused to sign the contract and is seeking to pay less than it did in 2017.

Louis A. Cella succeeds father as president of Oaklawn Park

Louis A. Cella has been named president of Oaklawn Park and of Southwestern Enterprises Inc., the racetrack’s parent company, according to a release from the track. Cella succeeds his father, Charles J. Cella, who died Dec. 6 at 81.

Cella’s family founded the Oaklawn Jockey Club in 1904.

Earlier this year, Louis Cella became the third generation of his family to serve on the board of directors of the Thoroughbred Racing Associations. He was elected to the Jockey Club in August.
