Breeders' Cup mum on possible changes, site selection

The board of the Breeders’ Cup met as scheduled on Friday in south Florida to discuss a number of potential changes to the organization’s event, but a spokesman for the group said after the meeting that there was “no news” to report.

Jim Gluckson issued the brief statement Friday in response to an inquiry about the meeting and whether the board had approved any of the various proposals that were said to be items of discussion.

“There is no news to discuss today,” Gluckson said.

Gun Runner overwhelming winner as Horse of the Year

An emphatic victory in the Breeders' Cup Classic helped to clinch Gun Runner's Horse of the Year title.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The wave of support for Gun Runner has reached from sea to shining sea. An award he secured at Del Mar in the Breeders’ Cup Classic more than two months ago was officially made his on Thursday night at Gulfstream Park, when Gun Runner was announced as the Horse of the Year for 2017 at the 47th annual Eclipse Awards dinner.

Gun Runner also was named champion older dirt male, downing Arrogate – the only horse to finish in front of him in 2017 – in both categories.

Total handle in California flat in 2017

ARCADIA, Calif. – All-sources wagering on races throughout California fell by less than 1 percent in 2017, according to data announced at Thursday’s California Horse Racing Board meeting.

Handle at daytime Thoroughbred meetings, the harness meetings in Sacramento, and the year-round Quarter Horse and lower-level Thoroughbred meeting at Los Alamitos combined to reach $3,034,102,885, a decline of 0.15 percent from $3,038,641,024 in 2016.

San Luis Rey fire response voted 2017 NTRA Moment of the Year

The racing and equine community’s response to the December fire that swept through San Luis Rey Training Center in Southern California has been voted the 2017 Moment of the Year, according to the organization that administers the award, the National Thoroughbred Racing Association.

The Dec. 7 fire, which killed 46 Thoroughbreds at the training center, galvanized members of the racing and equine communities nationwide, with thousands of individuals providing assistance or funding to the relief effort.

Breeders' Cup board set to discuss major event changes

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The board of the Breeders’ Cup is scheduled to meet Friday to discuss a number of proposals that could have significant impacts on its two-day event, including several radical changes that could upend the racing calendar, according to officials involved with the organization.

Craig Fravel, president and chief executive of Breeders’ Cup, said late last week that he would not comment specifically on any proposals that are expected to come before the board, and he rejected suggestions that any of the ideas are on a fast track to implementation.

West Virginia Racing Commission declines to approve purse funds for Charles Town Classic

The West Virginia Racing Commission on Tuesday voted not to approve the $1.2 million purse of the Charles Town Classic, putting the future of the Grade 2 race in jeopardy.

New York tightens rules on painkilling medications

The New York Gaming Commission on Monday formally adopted new rules that will prevent horsemen from administering more than one regulated painkilling medication to a horse within four days of a race.

The commission adopted the rules on a unanimous voice vote after little discussion. Under the new rule, a horse can be administered one regulated painkilling medication, known as non-steroidal anti-inflammatories (NSAIDs), up to 48 hours prior to a race, but any other administrations of a different NSAID would be prohibited within 96 hours of the race.

NYRA in no rush to begin nighttime racing
