Full-card Derby Day handle rises 7.8 percent

Barbara D. Livingston
Despite heavy rain on Derby Day, all-sources handle on the Derby and the full card set records.

The Kentucky Derby and its undercard just keep getting bigger.

Fresh off of records set last year, the Derby this year attracted $148 million in bets, a 7.5 percent increase, while the entire 14-race card broke the $200 million mark for the second straight year, at $223.7 million, a jump of 7.8 percent over the full-card number last year, according to charts of the races produced by Equibase. (Daily Racing Form figures differ from those released by Churchill Downs because DRF does not include future-pool wagering numbers. The future pools close weeks before the Derby.)

TV ratings for Kentucky Derby dip

The Kentucky Derby broadcast on NBC on Saturday posted a 9.1 overnight rating and a 21 share, according to the television network, with both figures representing significant declines from last year.

The 9.1 overnight rating was a 13 percent decline from the 10.5 rating posted last year, while the 21 share was an 8.7 percent decline from the 23 share posted last year. While the overnight rating is a numerical measure of the number of people watching a broadcast, share is a measure of the percentage of televisions in use that are tuned into a broadcast.

Handle flat at Fair Grounds; Hawthorne sees declines

Betting on the 80-day Fair Grounds meet that ended March 31 showed slight increases compared with the 2016-17 season, but that is not especially good news for the historic New Orleans racetrack.

Last year’s Fair Grounds meet took a major hit when the equine herpesvirus was discovered in the backstretch population, and all-sources average daily handle dropped more than 8 percent from the 2015-16 season. And though the track did better, this season’s business didn’t come close to rebounding to 2015-16 levels, according to the Louisiana Racing Commission.
