New York owner-trainer Brandon Charlerie has licenses revoked

The New York Gaming Commission on Monday approved a decision to revoke the owner’s and trainer’s licenses held by Brandon Charlerie and make him ineligible to apply for any license for three years.

The decision was a significant step up from an original 60-day suspension levied by New York stewards last year after they concluded Charlerie acted as a front for two unlicensed owners in the claim of the horse Palladian Bridge at Belmont Park in October of the previous year. The stewards’ ruling also included a recommendation that the commission consider additional sanctions.

California sports betting bill unlikely for November ballot

Legalizing sports betting in California faces a difficult deadline to make the November ballot and could be years from implementation, according to state racing executives and legislative staff.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday struck down a federal law that prevented individual states from authorizing sports betting. New Jersey, which led the fight to allow sports betting, is putting regulations in place and is expected to begin betting in the near future. Delaware officials said Thursday that they hope to begin sports betting in coming weeks.

Churchill Downs Inc. partners with New Jersey casino with eye on sports betting

Churchill Downs Inc., the publicly traded gambling company, has entered into a partnership with Golden Nugget Atlantic City, a New Jersey casino and online gambling website operator, in the wake of this week’s ruling by the Supreme Court affecting sports betting, the company’s announced on Wednesday.

The companies provided few details about the agreement in a release, but Churchill said in the announcement that it was targeting the first quarter of 2019 “to begin accepting legal wagers for [on-line gambling] and sports betting in New Jersey.”

Paddy Power-Betfair confirms it is talking with fantasy site FanDuel about possible merger

Paddy Power-Betfair, the company that owns and operates TVG and an exchange-wagering system in New Jersey, confirmed on Wednesday that it is in talks with FanDuel, a daily fantasy sports operator, on a potential merger.

In a statement following reports in the financial press about the talks, Paddy Power-Betfair said that “discussions are ongoing, and there is no certainty as to whether agreement will be reached, or as to the terms or timing of any transaction.”

All five juvenile races will be held on Breeders' Cup Friday, with the Distaff and Dirt Mile being moved to Saturday.

The Breeders’ Cup will hold all five of its 2-year-old stakes on its Friday program starting this year in a reconfigured schedule that moves the Distaff and Dirt Mile to the Saturday card, the organization announced Thursday. The 2018 Breeders’ Cup is scheduled for Nov. 2-3 at Churchill Downs.

William Lakeland, Preakness to be inducted into Hall of Fame

The 19th century racehorse Preakness, namesake of the second leg of the Triple Crown, and the trainer William Lakeland, whose career included wins in some of the biggest races of the late 19th century, will be inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame this year following their selection by the hall’s Historic Review Committee, the organization announced on Wednesday.

Ontario Racing board signs provincial funding agreement

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The Ontario Racing board of directors has announced the signing of a 19-year funding agreement with the Ontario government, which announced last month that it would allot up to $105 million annually to horse racing industry stakeholders over the period.

The funding will be used to sustain breeding and racing, including purse management, operational expenses, and capital improvements. It is meant to help bolster the entire industry following the abrupt end to the racetrack slots program in 2012. The loss of the slots program led to a downturn in the industry.
