Ritvo acknowledges community concerns about Massachusetts racetrack proposal

Local residents at a public town-council meeting Monday night in Lancaster, Mass., expressed legitimate concerns about a proposal to build a racetrack there, according to Tim Ritvo, chief operating officer for The Stronach Group, which is behind the proposal.

The plan, still in an embryonic stage, calls for building a racetrack on a 100-acre parcel of land north of the community of 8,000, located 45 miles west of downtown Boston. Ritvo, who attended the meeting, said the community’s concerns could be addressed as the proposal evolves.

Tote error leads to Rainbow 6 carryover snafu

AmTote and the Maryland Jockey Club made an error when tabulating the payoffs for the Rainbow 6 at Laurel Park on Saturday, incorrectly reporting a carryover when indeed the bet was hit.

Laurel initially transmitted there would be a Rainbow 6 carryover of $22,259 into the Sunday card. Instead, there appear to be two winning combinations, but because they are on the same ticket, they are considered individual winners.

John Andreini, partner in Ruidoso Downs, dies at 90

John Andreini was one of four partners in a group that owns Ruidoso Downs.

John Andreini, a prominent owner of Quarter Horses and a partner in New Mexico's Ruidoso Downs, died following a brain aneurysm on Friday, according to a statement released by Ruidoso Downs.

Andreini, who lived in San Mateo, Calif., was 90.

Last October, Andreini, Narciso Flores, Stan Sigman, and Johnny Trotter purchased Ruidoso Downs from R.D. Hubbard.

In business, Andreini operated a privately held insurance brokerage under his name, Andreini and Co., which was launched in 1951. The company is based in four states and employs more than 200 people.

Jim Dunleavy, the mid-Atlantic correspondent for Daily Racing Form, has been named the winner of the 2018 Bill Handleman Award by Monmouth Park to recognize outstanding coverage of the track’s marquee race, the Grade 1, $1 million Haskell Invitational.

Dunleavy was honored for his write-up of a race in which Girvin caught McCracken in the final stride, with Practical Joke not far behind. This is the first Handleman Award for Dunleavy, who covers racing and racing issues throughout the mid-Atlantic region.

Stronach Group provides more information on Massachusetts racetrack proposal

The Stronach Group has filed rudimentary renderings to the Lancaster, Mass., town council of a racetrack it hopes to build outside of town. In answer to questions from the council, The Stronach Group also said it would expect to run approximately 30 dates at the track.

Trainer Forrest Kaelin dies at 83

Forrest Kaelin won 1,600 races over the course of nearly 60 years as a trainer.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Forrest Kaelin, who trained Thoroughbreds for nearly 60 years following a brief riding career, died Thursday of natural causes at his Louisville home. He was 83.

Kaelin disbanded his Churchill Downs stable less than two months ago because of his deterorating health, with fellow trainer Jimmy Baker looking after the sale and placement of his few remaining horses.
