Arizona Downs management tells horsemen it will close after Sunday

Officials of Arizona Downs in Prescott Valley told horsemen on Thursday that this Sunday’s card will be the last of the meet, according to a trainer present at the meeting, a statement confirmed later on Friday by the track’s general manager and through a press release issued by the track.

Hall of Fame jockey Randy Romero in hospice

Randy Romero may soon return to work as a jockey agent for apprentice Christina Bonilla.

Hall of Fame jockey Randy Romero, who has suffered with kidney and liver disease for years, is under hospice care at his home in Lafayette, La., according to his friend and colleague, retired jockey Eddie Donnally.

Romero, 62, told Donnally: “I’m very sick but I haven’t given up,” further relating that surgery for a rare kidney and liver transplant was not feasible.

Kentucky Supreme Court to rule on legality of racetrack gaming machines

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky Supreme Court has ordered that a case involving the legality of machines that have proved lucrative to Kentucky racetracks and horsemen be moved to its domain.

In an order dated June 13, the Supreme Court granted a motion sought by the Family Foundation of Kentucky, a conservative religious group, to transfer the case to the court’s docket, bypassing the lower Court of Appeals. The order states that the seven Supreme Court justices “all concur.”

The owner of Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort in West Virginia has reached an agreement to sell the operating assets of the track and two other casinos to Century Casinos, a publicly traded company that owns two racetracks and an account-wagering company in Canada, the two principals have announced.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Canadian Hall of Fame owner Gustav Schickedanz died Monday at home near Schomberg, Ontario, at 90.

Schickedanz campaigned a host of Canadian champions under trainer Mike Keogh, most notably Wando, who was the last Canadian Triple Crown winner and Canada’s Horse of the Year in 2003.

Jockey Richard Bracho in hospital with back and neck injuries

Veteran jockey Richard Bracho remains in Jefferson Torresdale Hospital in Philadelphia following a one-horse spill in the fourth race at Parx on Sunday.

Bracho was aboard first-time starter Cinnamon Latte for trainer Martin Silvio in the 5 1/2-furlong sprint for $20,000 maiden claimers. They were racing near the back of the pack inside several horses when Cinnamon Latte fell heavily, throwing Bracho forward.
