Horse isolated at Delaware Park after contracting 'strangles' infection

A horse at Delaware Park has been isolated in a barn well removed from the main stable area after testing positive for Streptococcus equi, or strangles. In response, all of the racing organizations in the Mid-Atlantic have placed shipping and racing restrictions on the Stanton, Del., track.

The New York Racing Association, Maryland Jockey Club, Monmouth Park, Parx Racing, Charles Town, and Penn National are all refusing entries from horses stabled at Delaware Park and have informed horsemen that any horse shipping to Delaware Park will not be allowed to return.

CHRB gains authority to suspend race meetings for safety reasons

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed legislation on Wednesday giving the California Horse Racing Board the authority to suspend a race meeting on short notice for issues related to equine safety.

The measure was introduced earlier this year following a series of equine fatalities at Santa Anita and passed the state Senate and state Assembly without opposition.

“Business as usual has resulted in too many horse deaths,” Newsom said in a statement.

Ontario Racing announces new Ontario-bred bonus program

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Ontario Racing has announced a $2.375 million bonus program as part of the 2019 Thoroughbred Improvement Program (TIP).

The new program offers a $2,500 bonus that will be distributed evenly between the owner and breeder of a winning Ontario-bred in overnight races at Woodbine. At Fort Erie, $1,250 will be split evenly between the winning owner and breeder of a victorious Ontario-bred in overnight events.

Hollendorfer begins moving stable to Los Alamitos, Pleasanton

Jerry Hollendorfer's two wins on Sunday moved him into sole possession of fourth place on the all-time winningest trainers list.

ARCADIA, Calif. – By 11 a.m. Sunday, three horse vans were parked outside of trainer Jerry Hollendorfer’s stable at Santa Anita, waiting to transport the 46-horse stable to Los Alamitos about 30 miles away.

Late Saturday morning, in the hours after the Hollendorfer-trained American Currency suffered a fatal injury in a workout, track officials informed the Hall of Fame trainer that he had 72 hours to vacate his stable. American Currency was the stable’s fourth fatality in racing or training and the 30th for all stables at Santa Anita since late December.

Hollendorfer banned from Santa Anita, Golden Gate after horse sustains fatal injury

ARCADIA, Calif. – Hall of Fame trainer Jerry Hollendorfer was ordered to vacate his 46 stalls on the Santa Anita backstretch within 72 hours by track management on Saturday, hours after the stable’s American Currency suffered a fatal injury in a workout, Hollendorfer said.

American Currency sustained a fetlock injury on the infield training track and could not be saved. American Currency was the fourth horse trained by Hollendorfer to be euthanized as a result of an injury in a race or during training, and the 30th overall for all stables, since the meeting began Dec. 26.
