Bet This, Not That: Races on Saturday, April 11

Had a strong day last Saturday, with $18.40 and $39.40 winners. This week, we’ll keep it short, with just three “Bet This” plays. Again, let’s use DRF Formulator to look at a few plays around the country. Formulator allows you to see the lifetime past performances of horses who have run in the past five years for any trainer who has horses entered, as well as charts, replays, filters, and more.

McGee: Keeneland pick four play for Sunday, April 12

I’m going to rely on Jimmy Toner taking advantage of RECEPTA still being eligible for a 2x condition when the filly returns from a layoff in the Sunday finale (R9). Her early performances were enough for her to be tried in Grade 1 company a couple of times before she was sidelined following the Belmont Oaks. She left out of Palm Meadows this week with a bullet work, her eighth in a series that began in mid-February. John Velazquez has the mount.

Key Race report: Sky Preacher has kept very classy company

Sky Preacher (ML 8-1) returns Friday in race 7, a first-level allowance at Santa Anita. It will be his first start since finishing eighth by 18 1/4 lengths in the Grade 1 FrontRunner at Santa Anita on Sept. 27. The top four finishers -- American Pharoah, Calculator, Texas Red, and Lord Nelson -- from that race came back to win their next starts.

Free: How I'd play Santa Anita on Saturday, April 11

ARCADIA, Calif. – A veteran wheeling back in eight days and a second-start maiden longshot are the keys to this handicapper’s Saturday at Santa Anita.

They are in races 2 and 4; a temptation is to use them to fashion a pick five on races 1-5. But there are problems with that idea, beginning with NEXTDOORNEIGHBOR in the first race. He offers negligible value at 4-5 but looks tough to bet against.

BreezeFigs Quick-Pix for Saturday, April 11th by Bob Fierro and Jay Kilgore

If you went with Defined, our Pick last week as the key, it worked out OK at $7.50 for an exacta with the winner, who was never in doubt.  And if you keep good records you would also have spotted excellent opportunities in stakes that day, with BreezeFigs graduates shining brightly—if not illuminating the tote—from coast-to-coast:  Carpe Diem won the Grade 1 Blue Grass and Ocho Ocho Ocho was third; Dortmund (whom we inadvertently left out of our prattle last week), won the Grade I Santa An

King: Three Kentucky Derby contenders who can rate

Amanda Hodges Weir/Hodges Photography
International Star, shown winning the Louisiana Derby, has the stalking style that should fit well with the abundance of front-runners in the projected field for the Kentucky Derby.

A little more than three weeks removed from the Kentucky Derby, shortly before the last major prep for the race, the Arkansas Derby, the list of contenders is long, as are the number of horses who have a front-running or pace-pressing style.

In doing a little bit of pre-Derby research, the similarity of running styles among the probable starters was the immediate thing that jumped out when looking at the contenders listed in Daily Racing Form’s Derby Watch.

Weekend Warrior for April 11: Picks for Oaklawn Handicap, Las Cienegas, Ben Ali

Coady Photography
Tapiture, training at Oaklawn on Monday, is likely to improve making his second start following a layoff in the Oaklawn Handicap.

The last two Kentucky Derby prep points races will be run Saturday, with one having a tangible impact on the composition of the Kentucky Derby field, and the other having no impact whatsoever.
