COMMENT: Molly Morgan was second in this race last year but a clever move by rider Corey Lanerie may have been the difference this year as she went one spot better to post the win. She bided her time early while saving ground, came with a smart run on the far turn, cutting the corner, surged to the lead and rebuffed some challengers to prevail. The Grade 2 Fleur de Lis here June 13 figures next.

Let’s close out opening week at Belmont with a late pick four play on an intriguing sequence.

American Pharoah was best winning the Kentucky Derby, and he deserves all the credit he is receiving. But while I am well aware he has the speed and the talent to get a perfect trip every time he races, it must be said that American Pharoah had yet another perfect trip Saturday. He stalked a deliberate pace, moved at a point when it was ideal for him to move, and out-finished a gutsy Firing Line. It was all pretty simple. And now, that’s five straight stakes victories for American Pharoah after five straight perfect trips.

American Pharoah, Dortmund give Baffert potent one-two punch in Derby (DRF Plus)

Cat Burglar (#6, ML 4-1) returns for the first time since June 14 in Saturday’s fourth race at Churchill Downs, a one-mile optional claimer. Trainer Bob Baffert is winning at 32 percent clip when starting a horse coming off a layoff longer than 180 days, for a return on investment of $2.45.

Fear (#1, ML 6-1) will return to action in Saturday’s 12th race at Belmont Park, a six-furlong maiden claimer on turf. It will be his first start since a third-place finish by 3 1/4 lengths in a maiden race March 22 at Gulfstream Park. The first-, second-, and fourth-place finishers from that race came back to win their next starts.
