With six of Saturday’s 10 races at Belmont Park scheduled to be run on turf, bettors are going to have to keep an eye to the sky. According to the National Weather Service, there is a 30 percent chance of thunderstorms, “mainly after noon,” so we all should be ready to make changes on the fly if necessary. But a 30 percent chance is better than the 50 percent chance that was in the forecast just 24 hours ago, so here’s hoping.

ARCADIA, Calif. – A pair of pick threes offers price potential Saturday at Santa Anita. Both bets (races 3-5; races 7-9) will single longshots in turf sprints. At $1 per, the total cost is $20.
Race 3
No knock on the favorite Majestic Minister in this turf sprint for $25,000 claiming fillies and mares, but second preference PRETTYHOTPRINCESS (8) offers value at 8-1. Claimed from a modest comeback by Jack Carava, the mare returns to the surface on which she ran so well last summer in the Midwest. Prettyhotprincess is a single at a price.
Trainer Graham Motion saddles Eyeful (#6, 7-5) in Friday’s second race at Belmont Park, a seven-furlong optional claimer on turf. Motion is winning at a 27 percent clip when saddling a horse getting first-time Lasix, for a return on investment of $2.85.

OK, this is a good news-bad news report and all the news concerns something which we cannot recall ever happening. Twentytwentyvision (#2, ML 3-1) returns in Friday’s seventh race at Santa Anita, a one-mile optional claimer on turf. It will be his first start since finishing first by 1 3/4 lengths in an optional claimer May 8 at Santa Anita. The third- and fifth-place finishers from that race came back to win their next starts.

Six weeks since the Kentucky Derby, another Grade 1 goes Saturday night at Churchill Downs with the Stephen Foster. That race along with a trio of supporting graded stakes make for a good evening of racing, and with the quartet of stakes going one after another, the sequence makes for an attractive pick four play.

With a thrilling Triple Crown behind us, the second half of the stakes season unofficially begins Saturday with two Grade 1 events on the schedule. The Grade 1, $500,000 Stephen Foster Handicap tops a card at Churchill Downs that includes three other graded stakes, the most notable being the Grade 2, $200,000 Fleur de Lis Handicap.
